Still one of the best beat 'em ups I've ever played, especially in two-player co-op mode. This legend is closing in on 40 years and still makes my gamer heart beat a little faster. Picking up the dropped weapons was such a blast! Double Dragon (1987, Technos Japan).

Watching a hard drive do its thing was one of the most zen-like, hypnotic, and soothing things you could do in the 90s. Oddly satisfying and deeply relaxing.

On this date in 1987, "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!" was released in North America. BITE-SIZED FACT | Players stepped into the ring as Little Mac, working their way through a colorful cast of opponents in one of the NES era's most memorable boxing games. #80s

Two things that any Sim City player would have tried. The classic: Hold Shift and type FUND to receive $10,000. Using it repeatedly can trigger an earthquake, so itโ€™s often best to use it before building much or while the map is mostly empty. I learned that the hard way... Tax exploit: Keep taxes at 0% most of the year. Just before tax collection, raise them to 20% (or higher), collect the money, then drop them back to 0%. Citizens stay happier as if taxes stayed low. Sim City residents apparetly have a very short memory. Any other tricks that you remember?

One of the most disappointing endings to an MLB season ever?๐Ÿ˜ฌ A franchise that committed over $1.8 billion to just five players: Ohtani: $700M Betts: $365M Yamamoto: $325M Tucker: $240M Snell: $182M 2026 adjusted payroll: $339M Deferred salary commitments: $1.1 billion And after all that, they get SWEPT in the NLCS by a Milwaukee Brewers team with a $146M payroll ๐Ÿงน

Duck Hunt for the NES from 1984 felt like magic. The actual technology behind it - though not magic - was pretty smart and relied more on how the human eye works (or in this case: doesn't work). The NES Zapper is a simple light gun that contains a photodiode (a light sensor) and a trigger button, it doesnโ€™t actually shoot anything itself. When you pull the trigger in Duck Hunt, the game briefly turns the entire screen black for one frame, then immediately shows a white box exactly where each duck or other target is. The Zapperโ€™s sensor checks whether it sees that sudden bright light, and if it does, the game counts a hit, and if not, itโ€™s a miss. The reason why you don't see this? It simply happens too fast (a fraction of a second), so you barely notice the flash, especially not in the heat of the moment. This only works properly on old CRT TVs because of how they draw the image. Illusion perfected!

MLB has proposed returning to a 154-game Regular Season, best-of-seven Division Series, and opponent selection in the Wild Card and Division Series Starting in 2029, shortening the season to a 154-game schedule would create a standard weekly off day benefiting player health, and it would allow the addition of up to 8 more Postseason games by moving to a best-of-seven Division Series format Beginning in 2027, higher-seeded clubs in the Wild Card and Division Series would select their opponents

yes, and its painful. took me a decade to realize surgery model was closer to the ideal for medicine rounding. obviously different fields, and medicine by nature requires discussion of diagnostic reasoning and managing various ailments. but once you remove diagnoses that are nonsensical and of no significance (elev lactate, nagma, sirs, anemia, sodium) and remove diagnostic evals & treatments that don't work or supported by evidence, hospital medicine becomes much more streamlined, fun, and more impactful since you focus on what matters. i typically order labs on 1 in 5 patients day to day, restricted to labs where the answers matter. I get rid of silly meds. I limit my consults to narrower range of questions
and Medicine is like letโ€™s pause in the middle of 6 hrs of rounding to talk about hyponatremia for 30 min

There are very few details released. Any potential breach in laboratory procedure (especially one that leads to infection/death) should have a swift response with maximum transparency to the communities impacted.
Russian authorities are responding to an incident in which a suspected dangerous infection was released as a result of a laboratory accident in Siberia and a researcher died. cnn.it/4yy0wJR

Happy 40th birthday, Roger Wilco! Forty years ago this month, Sierra shipped a joke that turned into a series. Space Quest: Chapter I - The Sarien Encounter put you in the boots of Roger Wilco, a clueless janitor on the research ship Arcada, after the Sariens steal the Star Generator. Scott Murphy and Mark Crowe, the โ€œTwo Guys from Andromeda,โ€ built it in Sierraโ€™s AGI engine after working on Kingโ€™s Quest, and they ditched the fairy-tale tone. It sold over 100,000 copies and got a VGA remake in 1991 (call me old fashioned, but I still prefer the original version even now). Sierra games were quite notorious for the many ways in which you could die, and none did it quite as well as Space Quest I. Roger stumbled head first into many, many traps, lasers, and critters. Did the high degree of difficulty annoy you back then, or were you in the camp of โ€bring it on?โ€ Personally, I find when games are too easy they're less motivating, they feel a bit pointless and lacking a challenge. Tougher games that make you work for it feel more rewarding in the end.
