Auruculas - or posh primroses as I dub them - are among the stars of the spring rockery. So it was a surprise to find my sole plant in bloom today right at the wrong time - 6 months early or maybe late. The colour range is huge, & foliage often comes coated in a white dusting.

You popped up on my phone so - as an island lover without actually living on one - I'll be pleased to follow you. I live directly opposite Lundy in North Devon. Do you know it? - G.

Smoky-purple and fragrant, rose Ebb Tide is a colour curiosity which appeals to me, along with other so-called blue and off-white varieties. Ebb Tide, a US-bred floribunda from 2001, tops a modest 2ft 6in, has an old-fashioned look & for those with sharp nostrils a spicy scent.

Like the universe it mirrors, cosmos - horticulturally speaking, that is - has put on an out-of-this-world show in our patch this summer. Now, amid the golden autumnal hues, this one is determined to bloom. And there are still plenty of buds swelling to create a cosmic October.

Fiery pansies and vibrant violas for an exciting autumn of colour.

I wonder which geniuses at itv sport decided on Nottm Forest v Leeds rather than one of the other potential giant killings, such as Plymouth v Coventry. Have these guys never heard of match-appeal?
For a touch of summertime exotica few plants can match the spectacular tigridia - a bulb/corm often known as Mexican shell flower. The 4in-5in wide blooms atop 10in-16in stems in various rich colour combinations seldom last longer than a day in hot weather but can do when cloudy.

My Absolutely Fabulous rose has had a tough time during summer’s relentless heat, so here's a reminder of how it shaped up a year ago. With striking butter-yellow blooms, Ab Fab is one of the best & was voted Rose of the Year 2010. Joanne Lumley & luvvies are sure to approve!

Take a little peek at my blog to see how our plants are coping - or not coping - in the fourth straight drought of the year.
