During the last warm days of October, chaplains of the 93rd Kholodnyi Yar Brigade held another christening ceremony at a lake not far from the front line. Dmytro, call sign "Shapik", was christened. He serves in @93Alcatraz and recently transferred to the 93rd Brigade from an assault unit. He had joined that unit from prison after signing a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. «God led me to this brigade, where I met the chaplain and asked to be christened. And look at the weather today – God has provided everything!» – Dmytro said enthusiastically. He recalled how he came to believe in God as a child. «I was an orphan and grew up in a boarding school in Sumy. One day, I ran away. I was walking along, getting hungry, and asked the Lord to send me some food. Then, up ahead on the highway, a truck carrying sugar beets overturned. I was so hungry that I started eating the beets. I thought God had heard me. Then I asked for something impossible: to get back to school without being punished. I was walking across a field when I saw some tractor drivers waving at me. I went over and told them the whole story. They stopped a passing truck – a KamAZ. And supposedly, it just happened to be driving past our school» – he said, making air quotes around the word "happened". «When I arrived, my class was standing in line for dinner. I quietly walked up, and nobody even noticed I’d been gone. That was when I became convinced that God had helped me. I’ve believed ever since». Before the ceremony, Father Yevhen Savchenko said a prayer and explained its meaning: «Christ came into the world to take our sins upon Himself. He was crucified so that we might receive forgiveness and salvation. Christening is not just a ritual. It is an act of dedicating yourself to God. Now, Dmytro, you will be immersed in water as a testimony that you are dying to a world without God. And when you rise from the water, it will signify that you are being raised to a new life». The chaplain calmly steps into the cold water, his expression unchanged. Dmytro, on the other hand, rushes into the lake, shivering. He calls out that his feet are freezing. After the ceremony, he comes ashore looking pleased. He says it has been many years since he last swam in a lake, and now he has had the chance again – even if the water is already cold. It is much warmer on the shore, though. «We have completed the ceremony, and this was a small victory. From now on, your life and every step you take will be filled with small and great victories. We have all witnessed you making a vow to God. From this moment on, whatever trials you face, you can count on God’s presence and help. No matter what hardships come your way, you will not be alone. You can call upon the name of the Lord, and God will be with you» – the chaplain said.
