Reading non-film books and actually engaging with the world beyond film.
A case study in why it’s important to preserve and study film criticism of the past
OK, I'll bite. If John Cassavetes is so insanely influential and brilliant, why have I not heard about him until recently?
I've been on a side-quest with classic and esoteric movies, mostly through the Criterion collection. I've watched dozens of Criterion closet picks from filmmakers and actors I admire.
They pick Cassavetes films ALL THE TIME. Probably more than any other director except Scorsese. I haven't seen a single Cassavetes film. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about a Cassavetes film outside of those videos.
I'm not a slouch on film, I've got a pretty wide spread on what I've seen & what I appreciate. How has Cassavetes slipped through that net so completely for so long?
💯 I partly blame Filoni’s Clone Wars for this. The parallels between Luke choosing to spare Vader and Anakin choosing to save Palpatine by disarming Mace make Anakin’s selfishness clear.
Honestly, Padme’s continued attraction to Anakin after that scene is illustrative of liberals’ failure to meaningfully combat fascism. Prioritising individual feelings over a collective good. That it happens in the same place Luke first comes across Leia’s message is great.
13 year old boys are of course known for their refined taste and expansive perspective.
There are different storytelling priorities in each film. Iirc the prequel trilogy’s fight choreography was influenced by increased Western exposure to martial-arts and wuxia films throughout the 90s and early 00s.
This is the British media class operating as intended under the liberal idea of press freedom since the 1850s.
As a critic I can confidently say Wolf of Wall Street is an excellent film. As an observer of the world since its release, I can also say it has had a corrosive effect.

I'd say, about both films, to critics even more than to viewers: if you need Martin Scorsese or Nathan Fielder to tell you that fraud is wrong, it's already too late for you. (Even worse for critics who think they don't need it but the masses do.)
The three films you’ve listed are not high brow art films.

Not every movie has to be like Seven Samurai or The Good the Bad and the Ugly or The Godfather Part 2.
It's refreshing to watch a dumb fun movie or enjoy a bad movie sometimes.

Your 30s are a weird time because you start to see which of your peers & comrades are really about it and who was just having a rebellious phase on the way to becoming their evil parents… like what happened to class treachery, guys? :(
Whether she is innocent or not is immaterial to the issue at hand. When you consider the hounding Jason Arday was receiving at the hands of her powerful editor boyfriend. Arday was never under criminal investigation, but she is benefitting from protection not afforded to him.
Actually it is quite pertinent to mention for the press to mention that a person accused of possessing CSAM is in a relationship with a former senior government minister and current editor of The Spectator.

Not really. For a start, it's an active court case - you cannot just publish loads of stuff about it.
