Nick Shirley went to Seattle to investigate suspected food stamp fraud, and what started as an undercover investigation ended with his crew running for safety after a security guard lost his gun during a sidewalk fight. But what Shirley says he uncovered before that happened deserves attention. He spoke with a man who said he had $306 on his SNAP card and was willing to exchange those benefits for just $120 in cash. Then a woman reportedly took Shirley into a seafood market, where a cashier rang up a can of Spam and a plate of sushi for $120. When Shirley confronted the woman about food stamp fraud, she reportedly acknowledged knowing it was illegal and began identifying others she said were involved. And then things got dangerous. Outside the market, one of Shirley's security guards got into a physical confrontation. According to the report, the guard's firearm ended up in the crowd, and Shirley and his crew ran toward their vehicle as people began shouting his name. One man reportedly tried to follow them before yelling that he was on fentanyl and couldn't run. What concerns me most is the alleged abuse of a taxpayer-funded program intended to help people afford food. This money is meant to feed struggling families and is being diverted into cash transactions instead. There seems to be no part of government assistance that isn't being defrauded. And I want to know how widespread this is, whether the businesses involved are being investigated, and what authorities intend to do about it.
