The truckers’ protests in Italy, including in Augusta, Sicily, have also seen people waving Russian flags. This is something I have been saying for a long time: one of the biggest problems we have today is communication, and the way people receive information. First of all, the economic difficulties are real. Life is becoming harder for many people, from truck drivers dealing with rising fuel costs to ordinary families struggling with everyday expenses. These problems cannot simply be dismissed, and not every difficulty can be blamed on the government. Fuel prices are influenced by multiple factors, including global markets, energy policies, geopolitical instability and conflicts that have unfolded over the past years. The recent military operations by Israel and the United States against Iran, and the resulting escalation in the Middle East, have been among the biggest drivers of the recent surge in energy prices, particularly because of the threat to oil supplies and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Other factors are linked to government decisions, taxation and domestic policies, some of which can be changed and others which are much harder to control. But this is exactly where governments need to do more. They need to explain these things clearly, honestly and in language people actually understand. Not just issue carefully worded diplomatic statements, not just repeat that Russia is responsible for certain threats, but explain how Russia benefit from the situation. Because this is also part of information warfare. Russia does not need to create every economic problem facing Europe. It can exploit existing frustration, amplify narratives blaming European governments and sanctions for everything, and present itself as an alternative to a system that people have already begun to distrust. When people are struggling financially, these narratives become particularly effective. And here is my biggest point: you cannot fight disinformation with silence, vague diplomatic language or occasional statements that ordinary people barely understand. Politicians need to go out and speak to people as human beings, not just as politicians. Explain what is happening, acknowledge where their own governments have made mistakes, distinguish what can be changed from what cannot, and show how external actors exploit these situations for their own benefit. It should not be a random person on X who has to explain all of this. It should be the responsibility of political leaders to communicate clearly and directly with the public. Because when governments leave an information vacuum, somebody else will fill it. And they will not do so in the public's interest.
