What if we all chose to walk or bike for just half of our car trips of under a mile?
We’d save about $575 million in fuel costs and about 2 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.

A new supervisor should start by listening. Instead, D4 Supervisor Alan Wong says he’ll sponsor a ballot measure to remove Sunset Dunes Park — without community input.

If you want a quick explanation for the growing number of kids with anxiety/depression/behavioral disorders, this right here is it.
We used to move our bodies, routinely, rigorously, daily -- just en route to school.
Now, kids sit in cars. Caged monkeys. Losing their shit.

My kids walk to school because we live in a pre-war neighborhood that has enough density to support great neighborhood school options.
Over 40% of Americans students used to walk or bike to school. Now it's like 10%, which is depressing.

Every time a city prioritizes non-car travel, pedestrianizes thoroughfares, expands transit, improves bike networks, implements congestion pricing or creates new public spaces, that city becomes better.
It’s not a war on cars. It’s an effort to make cities better & more livable.

While @JoelEngardio’s loss tonight was not a shock to anyone, it still remains a heartbreak. I’ve been involved in SF politics for over a decade now, and I have never met a man kinder, more decent, and more sincere than Joel.
It is very sad to see the good guys lose

🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨
📰 The Bay Area Reporter (@eBARnews) just weighed in, urging Sunset/D4 voters to reject the recall:
💬“Recalls should be reserved for elected officials who’ve demonstrated negligence in office, or been convicted in a criminal case…”

We cannot go back to how dangerous and chaotic Market Street was, and these changes are opening up the door to going back.
That's why we're protesting Mayor Lurie bringing cars back to Market Street tomorrow at 5PM at Market & Montgomery.

If we really cared about kids’ safety, we’d ban cars before e-bikes. In 2021, 162,000+ kids were injured in car crashes, that's 445 per day. E-bike injuries among kids? Around 1 per day. Let’s be honest about what’s actually dangerous.

People up in arms about NYC’s $9/day congestion fee hurting low-income folks — but no one blinks at the $29/day (AAA avg) car dependency forces them to pay every single day, just to own and operate a car, before they even reach a job.
Car dependency is the real tax.

Caltrans has widened 101, NIMBYs have fought hard to block infill housing, defend parking, and prevent transit expansion and *gasp* bike lanes, and I have to inform you --
Their plan is working, perfectly. It is literally going exactly how you would expect.

Guys, sorry/not sorry, I am full-on LMAO at potential death of US car industry at the hands of an electric car salesman who made his billions scamming guilt-ridden liberals out of their cash so they could pretend they were solving climate while driving four blocks to Whole Foods.

In San Francisco we have two commercial streets one block apart: Clement and Geary. Clement is a two lane calm street, Geary is 6 lanes.
On Clement, business is booming, because it's a lovely place to be, especially during the 0 car farmer's market. Geary OTOH....

The analysis of Slow Streets crash data by Transpo Maps confirms the fact that when drivers go safe speeds, there are dramatically fewer crashes.
"If drivers would slow down on all San Francisco streets, we’d immediately see dramatically fewer crashes — just like what’s happened on Slow Streets," says Walk SF executive director Jodie Medeiros.

Interesting that people jump to asking "is it safe to fly?" but not "is it safe to drive?"
A single plane crash burns into the collective psyche for weeks or months. Meanwhile, the 100+ daily traffic deaths in the US barely register. The brain chooses spectacle over routine.

If we want to talk about making America healthy again, how about we start with the built environment not looking like this?

This video camera study showed that less than 5% of people on bikes broke traffic laws while riding, yet 66% of people did so when driving. And if you REALLY want even MORE bike-riders to obey laws, build more protected bike infrastructure. Via @carltonreid

The social media outrage over congestion pricing isn’t really about congestion pricing. It’s a fight over who pays for public goods—and suburban drivers want the subsidies to keep flowing without paying their share.

"it's bad to memorialize pedestrians killed by drivers because it might make their driver/killer feel bad" seems like some sort of new frontier in car-brain culture

Wanting an end to pedestrian deaths, is not politicizing a tragedy.
It's just not wanting people to die.
