#Workshop | Strengthening the evidence base for Papua New Guinea’s tuna fisheries under a changing climate.
A two-day workshop on climate change impacts and adaptation in Papua New Guinea’s tuna fisheries brought together representatives from the National Fisheries Authority, Papua New Guinea - NFA, the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) and @spc_cps under @theGCF Regional Tuna Programme.
Discussions covered changing ocean conditions, climate-driven tuna redistribution, tuna stock status, fleet dynamics and bioeconomic modelling, economic impacts, and the Advance Warning System under development.
The work supports fisheries decision-making, from near-term planning through to long-term adaptation, while linking with PNG’s broader fisheries and development priorities.
Thank you to NFA and its Executive Management Team for hosting, and to all participants for the productive discussions.
The workshop was held on 24-25 August, 2026 in Port Moresby.

#Workshop | Vanuatu advances preparations for regional crew labour standards
Fisheries authorities and stakeholders in Vanuatu are reviewing regional and international human rights and labour standards, looking at the national changes needed to implement new standards protecting crew aboard fishing vessels.
FFA supported a three-day national stakeholder consultation in Port Vila from 25 - 27 August 2026. The Vanuatu Fisheries Department took part as the key national authority that will lead and coordinate the Crew Labour Standards work in Vanuatu.
🗣️ “For Vanuatu, the FFA workshop on WCPFC labour standards is not merely a regulatory formality; it is a strategic imperative. It equips the country with the tools to protect vulnerable fishing crews, close legal loopholes in maritime labour enforcement, uphold its international commitments, and safeguard the long-term sustainability and reputation of its blue economy.”
- Tony Taleo, Deputy Director of Offshore, Vanuatu Fisheries Department
FFA is supporting similar consultations across its membership as Pacific countries and territories prepare for the Crew Labour Standards that was adopted by the @wcpfc in December 2024, and expected to come into force on 1 January 2028.
The workshops help Members clarify agency responsibilities, review their national systems and plan the changes required before the measure takes effect.

#Factsheet | Crew Labour Standards
4️⃣9️⃣3️⃣ days remain.
We are now past the halfway mark towards 1 January 2028, when the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) Crew Labour Standards Conservation Management Measure (CMM 2024-04) takes effect.
Adopted by the Commission in December 2024, these binding standards will strengthen the protection of crew working aboard fishing vessels.
FFA is supporting Members to prepare through providing technical advice and national stakeholder consultations. These workshops bring together industry representatives and government officials from fisheries, labour, maritime, legal and health to identify gaps and consider the changes needed in national laws and systems.
This week we are in Port Vila supporting a consultation with the Vanuatu Fisheries Department and relevant stakeholders from 25 – 27 August 2026.
The consultation is starting discussions and building awareness of what Vanuatu needs to do to implement the FFA crew employment Harmonised Minimum Terms and Conditions and WCPFC CMM 2024-04.
⏳ The countdown continues towards fair treatment, safer working conditions and stronger protection for crew aboard fishing vessels.

🏛️ Director-General’s Desk | FFA welcomes Vanuatu Police Commissioner
FFA was pleased to welcome the Commissioner of the Vanuatu Police Force, Karlshem Bongran and his delegation to FFA Headquarters in Honiara yesterday for a courtesy visit.
The visit provided an opportunity to highlight FFA’s role in supporting its 17 Members to sustainably manage their offshore fisheries resources, strengthen regional Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS), and maximise the social and economic benefits from the region’s tuna fisheries.
FFA Director-General Noan David Pakop highlighted that cooperation is the cornerstone of FFA’s work, with the priorities of Members guiding the Secretariat’s efforts. Through regional cooperation, FFA supports sustainable tuna fisheries management, strengthens fisheries surveillance, helps reduce losses from illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and supports Members to maximise opportunities for government revenue, export earnings and employment across the tuna sector.
The delegation also visited the FFA Regional Fisheries Surveillance Centre (RFSC), where they gained insight into its role in regional surveillance, information sharing, and coordinated monitoring which also contributes to broader regional security.
The visit also highlighted the Niue Treaty Subsidiary Agreement (NTSA) and how it enables FFA Members to coordinate fisheries surveillance, share information, and strengthen collective efforts to combat IUU fishing across the Pacific.
Commissioner Bongran acknowledged the important work FFA continues to deliver for its Members and appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the regional systems and capabilities available to Vanuatu to support their national efforts and priorities.

🏛️ Director-General’s Desk | Thailand Ambassador visits FFA Headquarters
FFA yesterday afternoon, welcomed Thailand’s Ambassador to Australia, Her Excellency Arjaree Sriratanaban, to the FFA Headquarters in Honiara during her first official visit to Solomon Islands.
Acting Director-General Allan Rahari briefed Ambassador Sriratanaban on FFA’s work and priorities in supporting its 17 Members to derive enduring economic and social benefits from the sustainable use of their offshore fisheries resources.
