There's a lot of chatter about mobile noise on trains, and I occasionally see comment that things were quieter in the past. The 1960s wants a word. Then, transistor radios were considered a plague, to the extent that British Railway's Western Region produced this poster.
🤳 Reels blaring from the seat behind? 📢 A video call on speaker that the whole carriage didn't ask to join? 'Loudcasting' on public transport has become a daily annoyance for many passengers. Share the carriage, not the noise: 👉 bit.ly/47y8czM

This bullshit project from Herts County Council isn’t about connectivity: it’s about cost cutting. This crap needs to be challenged. “Trackless trams” are not trams: they’re BUSES. Bouncing bendy buses stuck halfway in traffic; and take away tracks & you take away fixed links.
…this is a bus.

UCU have called a day of action in every University in the UK on Friday 20th November. We will be working with sister unions to ensure the biggest possible support for protests, rallies and events that will be held on this day. This is part of our fight to protect jobs and courses as well as build solidarity across the union. Materials will be dispatched to every branch. Start your local planning now.

BREAKING: University of Sunderland staff have declared a formal industrial dispute over plans for sweeping cuts. Management wants to slash £40m from its budget, putting jobs and students’ education at risk. Staff are ready to fight back. Industrial action could follow unless management changes course. Defend jobs. Defend education. ucu.org.uk/article/14679/Uni…

No @parcelforce, you did not try to deliver. If you had, two things would have happened: 1) I would have heard the knock/doorbell as I was not in a meeting at that point. 2) I would have had doorbell footage of said "attempted delivery". I will be reporting this to the sender.

Every worker facing redundancy at the University of Birmingham is from a migrant or minority ethnic background. UCU members will meet on 17 September to decide whether to ballot for strike action. No compulsory redundancies. Release the equality impact assessment. ucu.org.uk/article/14639/Uni…

University of Exeter staff have delivered a huge mandate to keep fighting cuts. 91% voted for industrial action on a 74% turnout. Members have already forced management to pull compulsory redundancy plans. Now they are demanding no further cuts, no more redundancies and action on spiralling workloads. The fight to defend jobs and education at Exeter continues. ucu.org.uk/article/14637/Uni…

Reform routinely attack universities as a "scam" and denigrate the value of higher education. The VC of Manchester Met and president of Universities UK should be defending the sector. Not cosying up to those who want to undermine it. Full response ⬇️ ucu.org.uk/article/14634/Uni…

Sadly this is not unique. The sector has to change, and the government can’t keep using ‘autonomy’ as an excuse for not making it change. We cannot keep losing so many amazing and dedicated staff. Staff deserve better and students deserve better.
Replying to @ucu
I retired early, because 23 hours of teaching contact with the students was killing me and wrecking my marriage. ANd I got letters from the VC saying you are not bringing in enough research money and we need to discuss your salary! 😢

Thank you #Toronto, and #Canada, it has been an absolute pleasure. Here I stand in front Canadian National locomotive no 6213 at @TORailwayMuseum . It was built in 1942 at the Montreal Locomotive Works and was in service until 1959.

It's poor. Particularly, I have a dataset built through examining papers in the "North East" and "Yorkshire & Humber" regions The new design doesn't group papers this way, so going back to the data and replicating my methods is harder What we actually wanted BNA was better OCR
