Turtleback Case

The sorrow of the beauty of life and service tragically cut short is represented in our Police memorial with each of our 238 officers honored therein. We face danger, adversity, and even death as we risk our lives to provide a service to our community; To protect and to serve.

In honor of Black History Month, we recognize Officers Robert William Stewart and Joseph Henry Green, who in 1889 became the first Black officers hired by the LAPD.

On January 19, an LAPD Sergeant assigned to Rampart Division was on patrol when he saw parents yelling for help, with a lifeless toddler in their arms. Without hesitation, the Sergeant took immediate action, cleared the airway, and seconds later the toddler was breathing.
