We built SMB Law Group around one idea: entrepreneurs buying and selling businesses deserve an M&A firm made for them.
This year, three national organizations recognized different parts of that work.
@Inc ranked us No. 1,042 on the 2026 Inc. 5000, one of America's fastest-growing private companies.
@AmericanLawyer named us a finalist for Best Corporate Practice, Small/Midcap Deals, in its 2026 Industry Awards.
@FT shortlisted us for its Innovative Lawyers North America 2025 program.
Underneath the recognition is the work our clients trusted us with: more than 400 transactions and $1.8 billion plus in deal value, on both sides of the table.
It means a lot to see our growth, our M&A work, and a more modern way of running a law firm noticed at this level. There's plenty more we want to build.

Four years later, I still laugh thinking about the first @SMB_ash.
We almost held it in one of those generic hotel conference rooms.
You know the kind: fluorescent lights, beige walls, crappy coffee, and a room that feels like every conference you’ve ever attended.
Instead, after nearly a month of searching, we stumbled onto a 2nd-floor speakeasy overlooking the bar scene in downtown Orlando.
It was perfect.
We rented couches, chairs, and enough seating for about 100 people. We built a makeshift stage. Then 125 people showed up.
This was still the COVID era, so let’s just say I’m glad the fire marshal wasn’t counting too carefully!
What I remember most was the bar sitting literally beside the main seating area.
On the first afternoon, we asked the bartenders to start passing drinks to everyone—attendees and speakers included.
I believe @BillDA and @kelceylehrich were on stage.
The stories became a little less filtered. The laughs got a LOT louder.
People stopped acting like conference attendees and started acting like old friends.
That was the moment it hit me: We hadn’t built a conference. We had built a reunion for people who had never actually met IRL.
Back then, the self-funded ETA / SMB community was still small, but it was exploding online.
COVID had forced everyone home, and many of us were getting to know one another through @X (then known as Twitter ... oh the good ol days).
Searchers, operators, investors, lenders, and aspiring business owners were sharing deals, lessons, mistakes, and advice.
Some of us had built real friendships without ever shaking hands.
A little-known detail about the name SMBash. Most people assume the event was named only after the SMB community. That was part of it...
But “SMB” also happened to be the initials of the three original founders: Sam. Matt (@MatthewGHinson). Brandon (@laughridge).
Looking back at the attendee list from that first SMBash is surreal!
Many of the people who would become OGs of the modern self-funded ETA community were in that little speakeasy, introducing themselves to each other for the first time.
@StrongpointRich. @CTW_SMB. @MikeBotkin_. @steveressler. @girdley. AJ Wasserstein. @WilsonCompanies. @darylbstarr. @J_M_Vogt. @LisaGForrest. @guessworkinvest. @chasemurdock. @nickfedele. @aebridgeman. Palmer Higgins.
And many others I’m undoubtedly forgetting.
At the time, they weren’t “the OGs.”
They were just people obsessed with buying and building great small businesses, sharing ideas freely, and helping each other figure it out.
None of us knew how much the community—or the broader ETA ecosystem—was about to grow.
SMBash did not create the movement. The movement was already building online.
But I do believe it was one of the early moments when that online community became a real-life community.
And many of those relationships from the early days of SMBx/SMBash still exist today.
Hearing this week that @BrentBeshore and his team are winding down Main Street Summit and Capital Camp made me nostalgic for that era.
Running events is brutally hard.
The economics often do not justify the months of planning, financial risk, logistics, and emotional energy required to create a great gathering.
That is why I have so much respect for Brent and his team, @moseskagan with Reconvene, and every organizer who has taken on the work of bringing entrepreneurs together.
The agenda matters. So do the speakers.
But the real magic usually happens somewhere else: In the hallway after a session. At a dinner that runs three hours longer than planned. At the hotel bar.
Or, in our case, inside an overcrowded speakeasy in Orlando, where 125 internet friends packed into a room built for 100, and helped turn an online network into a real community.
I’m grateful to Matt and Brandon for taking that leap with me. And for @KHendersonCo & @TwoTeesSMB & @honestlytara84 for keeping it alive.
And I’m grateful to everyone who showed up to that first SMBash and helped create something none of us fully understood at the time.
Communities do not build themselves.
They happen because people decide the relationships are worth the work.
And four years later, that is still the part I’m most proud of.
If you were there, I’d love to hear what you remember...

Four years ago today, we launched the first-ever social media-driven law firm, @smblawgroup.
Here’s how it’s going:

Number one theme from SMBash 2026 for me: it is objectively harder to get deals done, and deal quality is going down.
To paraphrase Jacob Hall: The self-funded search playbook of 2019-2021 no longer works.

Had an awesome time at @SMB_ash in Texas listening to Chris Williams from System Six break down what it really looks like to search for, buy, operate, and grow a business that makes the Inc. 500 list. One point that really stuck with me: pay attention to what energizes you—and go chase it. Thank you, SMBash, @TwoTeesSMB, and @CTW_SMB
for the insight and inspiration.

People always ask me what the best business conference for searchers and operators is...
My favorite is @SMB_ash and it's just three weeks away!
Who's going to be there?
David Brackett retweeted
Going to @SMB_ash for the first time was life-changing. I was in a room with people just like me: scrappy, tenacious, resourceful business owners from all different backgrounds and ages across the USA. I landed in a room with my people, where we could exchange ideas, stories, share problems, and offer solutions... it was total magic for me. I didn’t even know a conference could be fun and energizing. It will be my 3rd SMBash, and this one will be better than ever. I can’t wait to see the friends I have made and make new friends. I hope to see you there (and I’m easy to spot at the conference, please come up and say hi!)
Can't Wait to see everyone on the Line up this year including: @girdley, @CTW_SMB, Jacob Hall, @SMB_Attorney, @JaredJohnsonSBA, @SBA_Matthias, @MatznerJon, @pinpulleddrmf, @JermanMichael , Paul Henderson, @guessworkinvest, @StrongpointRich, Matthew Dolsky, @Sam_Rosati, Peter Lehrman, Joseph Cabrera, Danny Payne, @SuccessWithJake, @TwoTeesSMB , @KHendersonCo, John Hannum, and so many more.

Only six and a half weeks until SMBash 2026!
Sponsors are being locked in.
Speakers are almost finalized.
The meals have been chosen.
And lanyards are at the ready.
A quick reminder: SMBash isn’t a huge conference.
We intentionally cap attendance so the room stays intimate, the networking stays useful, and the connections you make are real.
If you’re planning to come, don’t wait too long to grab your ticket.

As we close out 2025, we are proud of what SMB Law Group has built and excited about where we are going.
SMB Law Group was founded to serve entrepreneurs and lower-middle-market business owners through their most important moments, buying, operating, growing, and exiting businesses. In just a few years, that vision has turned into a national platform with meaningful scale, real depth, and a growing team.
2025 by the Numbers
• Net Promoter Score: 95
• 160 plus five-star Google reviews
• 300 plus transactions closed as a firm
• Over $300 million in annual closed M&A volume
• Clients served across 13 licensed states
For a young firm, this level of trust and repeat engagement is rare. We do not take it lightly.
Diversification and Long-Term Stability
In 2025, SMB Law Group intentionally diversified its work beyond traditional SBA and SMB M&A. The result was a more stable platform for clients and a more durable business overall.
We expanded conventional M&A, general corporate, and ongoing advisory services while launching our Fractional General Counsel practice. This shift allows us to support clients well beyond closing and to serve as long-term partners throughout the life of their businesses.
Our goal is simple. Do M&A so well that we become our clients’ lawyers for the life of their business.
Process and Client Experience
In 2025, we also invested heavily in systemizing our industry-leading M&A process. Through our Clear Skies initiative, we standardized deal execution, implemented formal SOPs, and established uniform service expectations across all transactions.
This ensures that every client receives the same high-quality experience, regardless of deal size or team assignment, while allowing our lawyers to focus on judgment, strategy, and outcomes.
Awards and Recognition
SMB Law Group’s work in 2025 was recognized across the legal and business communities, including:
• Financial Times, North America Innovative Law Firms nominee
• Texas Legal Awards, Managing Partner of the Year nominee
• Ranked among the highest deal-volume firms in Texas
• 95 Net Promoter Score and 160 plus five-star Google reviews
We were also invited to speak at leading industry events, including Main Street Summit, SMBash, ETA Capital Forum, M&A Launchpad, and the HoldCo Conference.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Our vision remains clear. We are building the premier full-service national law firm for entrepreneurs.
In 2026 and beyond, we expect to continue expanding both our service offerings and our team through the SMB Growth Pathway. As part of that roadmap, we anticipate adding senior attorneys in areas including securities, employment, intellectual property, and commercial real estate.
Each practice area is built to scale into a meaningful business unit within a larger platform, offering real responsibility, leadership opportunities, and upside.
Thank You
We are grateful to our clients, referral partners, and growing team for trusting us with their businesses.
2025 was a year of meaningful progress. 2026 will be about compounding it.

Not just for small firms. Not just for up-and-comers.
He’s listed alongside the managing partners of Pillsbury, Norton Rose, and Paul Hastings.
And now… @smblawgroup!
This is what happens when you combine elite deal experience with a mission to serve entrepreneurs differently.
Kevin has led from the front since day one, and this recognition is well-earned.

Fun throwback to a nice time on stage at @SMB_ash with my good friend @taywall 🐶
We spent our panel talking about different options once you've been operating your growing small business for a few years
Take on more capital to pour rocket fuel on the growth? Embrace the chaos? What does that mean for you and your team?
Stay the course on majority ownership and deferring additional capital? How does that impact rate of growth, new and missed opportunites?
Turns out like everything, no right answer. Pros and cons to every journey
But one thing is 100% correct - make sure you have advisors, board members, friends, whatever, people around you that help you make these tough calls on your own. Don't make them in a vacuum. Rely people who have more experience than you
Thinking about selling/taking on more capital vs. continuing to grow on your own? I know Taylor and I, and the awesome folks behind @Sam_Rosati @TwoTeesSMB @KHendersonCo always happy to brainstorm
Especially if it's over a fast round of golf...
