ULM AMS is here at #AMS2024! We had a great time at the student conference and are excited for the rest of the week here in Baltimore. Congratulations to Alec and Emily on their poster presentation!
This is the type of information we hope to provide for the people of Louisiana through our state Mesonet project.
The increase in extreme weather events has created an urgent need for new climate solutions. @alroker spoke with @GovKathyHochul at @ualbany about New York’s new high-tech weather center. Get an exclusive look:

@TylerFricker et al discusses the digitization and geocoding of historical tornado reports from 1880 to 1989. 12,191 reports were used to create a spatial data set for analyzing characteristics, aiding research in tornado climatology.

Our student AMS chapter participated in the Fall Celebration at Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge today!
"[...] his most significant contribution to the Department of Geography is undoubtedly his mentorship.”
Well said! Congratulations on a well-earned retirement, Dr. E. Happy to have been a small part of your time at FSU.
.@FSU_Geography Professor James B. Elsner, Ph.D., retired this spring after 33 years at FSU.

Average annual tornado counts across radar coverages in the Mid-South and Southeast U.S. over the past ten years. Wonder what became operational in 2017, @toddamurphy?
Very exciting news for those of us @ULMweather. @toddamurphy has worked hard to make this happen and we’re ready to continue to serve the state with respect to weather and climate data.

Here is our (@toddamurphy) poster for #30SLS. Still some work left to do on this problem, but it is clear the KULM radar has greatly impacted raw tornado reports, enhanced the forecasting capabilities of area NWS offices, and likely reduced human impacts across the Ark-La-Miss.
Why do we frame our hazard solutions outside of current cultural, socioeconomic, and political systems? Where do we expect people to live in the U.S. and avoid hazard impacts? Do we really want to exchange one type of disaster for another?
That's us! Still amazed an EF-3 tornado went through a populated part of Monroe with largely inadequate housing and no injuries or fatalities occurred. Kudos to @NWSShreveport team for this one. Happy to have you all on our side.
🤓 New JOM Release!
"Analysis of the 12 April 2020 Northern Louisiana Tornadic QLCS"

Check it out over at nwas.org!
Our new paper takes a further look into the 2020 Easter Sunday Monroe (LA) tornado (and the broader tornadic QLCS). Proud to be a part of this project led by @toddamurphy.
🧵 Our paper is finally out in @nwas JOM assessing the 12 April 2020 Easter Sunday tornado in Monroe, and more broadly the tornadic QLCS across north LA that morning. This was a collaborative effort b/w faculty/students in our program and @NWSShreveport.
