Adverse childhood experiences are linked to chronic pain as well
A new study reveals how early adversity accelerates brain development in children, linking it to future mental health risks. This underscores the critical need for early intervention.

We are studying now how adverse childhood experiences impact chronic pain *and* response to evidence-based treatments that support regulation of cognition, emotion and CNS arousal (CBT, MBSR, and Empowered Relief) in people with chronic pain.
Early life events can significantly impact chronic pain. As @DrSeanMackey shared on the Huberman Lab episode out now, a recent meta-analysis of brain imaging studies found that people with early adverse life events often show abnormalities in emotional processing and functioning. This suggests that what happens to us early in life can impact us as adults and even change our neural wiring. These experiences can influence how we cope with pain, our levels of anxiety and depression, and our overall emotional health. Techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and acceptance and commitment therapy can be particularly effective.

We surveyed 3,500 patients on the term 'pain catastrophizing'
• 1/3 of those who had heard of the term said it was problematic or stigmatizing.
• Of those, 12% reported stigma from the term.
We concluded: "Clinician education on patient-centered terminology may improve care and reduce stigma."
