COURTESY CALL BY THE AMBASSADOR OF ETHIOPIA ON THE HIGH COMMISSIONER OF UGANDA IN TANZANIA Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Ambassador Yonus Yosef of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia paid a courtesy call on Ambassador (Rtd) Col. Fred Mwesigye, High Commissioner of the Republic of Uganda to the United Republic of Tanzania, at the Uganda High Commission in Dar es Salaam. During the meeting, Ambassador Yonus Yosef highlighted the cordial relations between Uganda and Ethiopia, noting that the two countries enjoy warm bilateral relations and maintain extensive engagements on matters of mutual interest. He briefed the High Commissioner on the prevailing security situation in Ethiopia, expressing concern over renewed rebel activities by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) since 13 September, despite the Pretoria peace agreement previously signed between the TPLF and the Ethiopian Government. He alleged that the group had violated the agreement and recently attacked Ethiopian national forces. Ambassador Yonus Yosef further alleged that the Government of Eritrea was providing support to the armed groups through the supply of weapons and drones, as well as training. He also cited the Sudanese Armed Forces as another actor allegedly supporting the groups. He informed the High Commissioner that Ethiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs had formally communicated with its Eritrean counterpart, calling for an end to the hostile activities, but the efforts had not yielded the desired results. In his remarks, Ambassador (Rtd) Col. Fred Mwesigye thanked Ambassador Yonus Yosef for the courtesy call and reaffirmed Uganda's solidarity with Ethiopia. He reflected on the vision of Africa's founding fathers, who championed African unity, solidarity and integration, noting that Ethiopia's historical experience as a country that was never colonised and its strategic importance to the continent made its stability particularly significant. The High Commissioner observed that external interests continue to undermine peace and stability in Africa by fuelling divisions and conflicts among African countries. He emphasised the need for African nations to recognise these challenges and prioritise cooperation, regional integration and collective security rather than being drawn into conflicts against one another. Ambassador Mwesigye further underscored the importance of establishing an effective African standby force capable of responding to security threats and promoting stability across the continent. He reiterated the principle of African solutions to African problems, stressing that sustainable peace requires African-led initiatives and collective responsibility. The High Commissioner concluded by assuring Ambassador Yonus Yosef of Uganda's support for Ethiopia and emphasised the importance of continued African solidarity and cooperation in addressing regional security challenges and safeguarding the continent's stability.

He acknowledged Uganda’s commitment to supporting the Centre and its continued role in promoting regional cooperation in minerals and geosciences. The Director General highlighted the financial challenges facing the Centre, noting that its annual budget was under considerable pressure, particularly given that many of the services it provides to member states are offered free of charge. He further observed that Tanzania, as the host country, benefits from the Centre’s services despite having outstanding membership contributions, raising concerns about the sustainability of the institution’s current funding model. The Director General also expressed concern over the Centre’s working relationship with the host country, Tanzania, as well as internal challenges arising from staff members instituting legal proceedings against the institution and, in his view, disseminating inaccurate information about its operations. In his remarks, Ambassador Mwesigye acknowledged the Centre’s importance and commended its leadership for remaining committed to strengthening the institution despite the challenges it faces. He reaffirmed Uganda’s recognition of the Centre’s regional significance and the need to safeguard its institutional capacity and sustainability. The High Commissioner further indicated that he would engage with his diplomatic counterparts, including the Kenyan High Commissioner, and relevant ministers to explore possible avenues for addressing the concerns raised ahead of the forthcoming meeting of the Centre’s Board of Directors in Kenya. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the Centre’s financial sustainability, institutional challenges and the importance of strengthening cooperation among member states to ensure that the Centre continues to fulfil its mandate in advancing minerals and geosciences development across the region.
