Nearly 160 years ago, Howard University was chartered to educate leaders and shape society. Today, as we begin the 2026–2027 academic year, every member of our community plays a vital role in building upon that legacy.
To our incoming and returning students, faculty, and staff: welcome home to The Mecca.
Our mission of truth and service remains clear. And we are unyielding in our commitment to deliver exceptional education, conduct ground-breaking research and uphold the values that have guided this University for generations.

It is with profound sadness and deep concern that U.S. Africa Institute announces the deportation of our community member, Ms. Mayeni Sylla, despite weeks of advocacy, legal support and repeated humanitarian appeals on her behalf since she was detained by ICE.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce Mark Mitchell's visit to Addis Ababa was his first — but not his family's. More than 75 years ago, his father, Ralph Flint Mitchell, Jr., was an Ethiopian Airlines pilot and served as personal pilot to Emperor Haile Selassie, accompanying the Emperor, the Empress, and even the royal dog on international travels, including the dedication of the Nile River bridge in May 1950. That history came full circle during DAS Mitchell's meetings in Ethiopia, a quiet reminder that America's partnership with Ethiopia spans generations. Some relationships, just like flights, are meant to go the distance. Check out some of Ralph Mitchell's photos he personally took of Emperor Haile Selassie below! #USinEthiopia
