An MIT Media Lab study used EEG to track what happens in the brain when people write with ChatGPT rather than on their own. Fifty four students completed essay tasks while wearing electrode caps. One group used ChatGPT, one used a search engine, and one used no tools. Across sessions, the ChatGPT group showed the weakest neural connectivity in networks linked to memory, attention, and analytical work. They also had more trouble recalling what they had just written and produced more generic prose. The authors describe this as a kind of cognitive debt: the tool does the synthesizing, and the brain stays quieter [1]. The same experiment points to a better order of use. Students who first wrote unaided and only later switched to ChatGPT showed stronger recall and more widespread brain activity than students who started with the model and then had to work alone. In other words, the model helped more when it scaffolded thinking that was already underway than when it replaced that thinking from the start. The practical lesson is not that large language models should be banned. It is that they work best as a second pass, after the writer has already done the hard part of forming and remembering an argument [1]. [Kosmyna, N., Hauptmann, E., Yuan, Y. T., Situ, J., Liao, X. H., Beresnitzky, A. V., Braunstein, I., & Maes, P. (2025). Your Brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of Cognitive Debt when Using an AI Assistant for Essay Writing Task. arXiv. Here’s the deal, folks: I don’t care whether you’re he/him, she/her, they/them, or what have you. I don’t care whether you’re black or white, yellow or tan, pink or brown. I don’t care what God(s) you believe or, or not. Or who you love, or what language you speak, or where you’re from, or how much money you have. The bottom line is: If you’re a person of goodwill, who treats others with the same respect you’d wish for yourself and who chooses each day to put a little bit of good, happiness, and joy into the world, instead of making everyone around you miserable, then you’re fuckin’ A-OK in my book and a potential friend. Honestly, nothing else matters more than that—not politics, not nationalism, not religion. It’s really that simple. I don’t know… just felt like saying it today, for whatever reason. Cheers, everyone. :)

I am genuinely devastated. As a Trekkie I've long been a fan of Patrick Stewart's gifts, and he has given us so many moments to treasure. His portrayal of Captain Picard was legendary and unrivaled. I could spend the next week posting clips of my favorite scenes that he carried. Measure of a Man. Best of Both Worlds. Family. The Inner Light. But the moment that lives in my brain forever was this exchange he had with a fan, blogger Heather Skye, at Comicpalooza 13 years ago, where he shared his experience as a survivor of domestic violence. It was a moment of candor and vulnerability that you rarely see from men in public life, and so needed for such an important issue. More than that, it revealed the depth of his character. We have lost someone utterly irreplaceable today. “Live now. Make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again.” Thank you, Sir Patrick, for daring us to reach for the stars and dream of a world where we take care of each other. 🖖

Same rules apply as when Dolly Parton passed away... ... The best way to honor Patrick is to BE the best version of yourself. BE picard, BE xavier.... Don't talk about it just do it. For the captain.

Here’s the entirety of “I Love Patrick Stewart”, a featurette on the American Dad Volume 7 DVD, where a bunch of the American Dad cast and crew gush about how much they love Patrick Stewart for 8 minutes And you can really that he was loved, and he loved them back

The amazing Typewriter Concerto... For anyone who needs a smile today... This is Leroy Anderson's 'The Typewriter' for orchestra, complete with all the familiar 'dings' and clitter-clattering of a typewriter. The soloist here is Alfredo Anaya, with conductor Miguel Roa

Raise your hands if you support that google should bring back the non-AI version of Google. Like no AI summary, no AI overview, no AI to read the internet, like we want Google to show the actual results.

My dream Gen X retirement community isn't a golf course or a luxury resort. It's a fully renovated 80s/90s shopping mall. Half the building is apartments. The other half looks exactly like the mall we grew up in. The Waldenbooks is now a massive library where you can spend hours getting lost in books. The food court is part of your meal plan, so you can grab an Orange Julius, a slice of pizza, Chinese food, or sit down for a proper meal at Shoney's whenever you want. The movie theater plays classics every night. The arcade is free and packed with Pac-Man, Galaga, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Donkey Kong, and every cabinet game we spent our allowance on. Sam Goody is still there. You can browse CDs, listen to Bowie, The Ramones, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or whatever you love. They even host monthly dance nights for anyone who still remembers MTV when it actually played music. The Sharper Image has massage chairs you can reserve whenever your back reminds you that you're no longer 25. The pharmacy is still an Eckerds. Blockbuster is fully operational. You can rent movies, video games, and spend 30 minutes wandering the aisles before choosing something you'll probably fall asleep watching. There's an aerobics studio offering Tae-Bo, Richard Simmons, MTV's The Grind workouts, and every fitness craze we survived the first time around. There are fountains everywhere, a lazy river because we've earned it, and plenty of benches where people can sit and talk instead of staring at their phones. Every morning we go mall walking before the stores "open." Every evening we meet friends at the food court. No algorithms. No endless scrolling. No influencers. Just books, music, movies, arcades, friends, nostalgia, and the feeling that for a few hours, it's 1995 again. Honestly, I'd put my name on the waiting list today.

Have you ever noticed we live in a country where a 95-year-old man can walk into a mud pit in Chicago, call his band The Fuckers, and start reciting “Enter Sandman” like he’s giving a TED Talk from the afterlife? William Shatner. Ninety-five. Riot Fest. Douglass Park. Thirty-five minutes. Spoken-word heavy metal. In the mud. With people cheering like this is normal. It is not normal. It is magnificent. He did “Crazy Train.” He did “Ace of Spades.” He did Metallica. Not sang them. Talked them. Like Captain Kirk got trapped in a guitar amp and decided to negotiate with Satan instead of the Klingons. Behind him: actual musicians. Marcus Nand. Phil Soussan. Grown men who have paid rent with real notes while a nonagenarian stands there going, “What the F is heavy metal?” and somehow makes it a question worth answering. Brian May is on the record. Tony Iommi is on the record. The album is called *What the F Is Heavy Metal?* which is the most honest title in music since someone first admitted most of it is just louder complaining. The crowd ate it up. Of course they did. We will watch a man old enough to remember radio as furniture stand in wet dirt and dare death to tap him on the shoulder. Death probably took one look, said “I’m not dealing with this today,” and went to find someone easier. You’re never too old to live out your dreams. That’s the line they always use. The real line is: most people quit the second it gets embarrassing. Shatner waited until embarrassing became the whole act, then sold tickets. Follow @wickedsmaahht before the rest of the timeline figures it out. #WilliamShatner #RiotFest #WhatTheFIsHeavyMetal #NeverTooOld #SpokenWordMetal #LiveLongAndGetLouder #CaptainKirkHasEnteredTheChat
