A typical nuclear power plant produces approximately 2-3 cubic metres of high-level radioactive waste per year of operation, meaning the entire lifetime output of a plant running for 40 years would fill a space roughly the size of a large living room.
All the high-level nuclear waste ever produced by US commercial reactors in over 50 years of operation would fit under one American football field stacked less than 10 yards deep.

Here is a list of things I think AI should be able to solve before it's dangerous enough to kill everyone:
1) all forms of entitlement fraud - this should be easily fixable by tracking payments and cash flows. Find where money goes in but no services are rendered. Child's play for an all-knowing AI.
2) elderly scam farms - fixed with telephony tracking, payment tracking, find the scammers, empty their bank accounts, sabotage their remote access strategies
3) narcotics trafficking - more money flow, disrupt crypto conduits, track chemicals being used for narcotic synthesis, disrupt those avenues of commerce
Compared to "the extinction of all humanity", these are very simple problems to tackle. These problems are a thousand times simpler than killing every person in the world
If you don't believe that AI can fix these narrowly banded issues, if you're immediately looking for reasons that I'm stupid an naive for thinking AI can solve these problems in the next 2 years, you have no business believing that AI can destroy all humans by the end of the decade.

The word "midwit" was coined to mean a sort-of-smart person who thinks he understands more than he does. The kinda guy who produces disasters by failing to understand the limitations of his own thoughts and plans.
These kinda guys tend to assume that superhuman intelligence would automatically lead to godlike power.
That's because the midwit is bottlenecked by his intelligence. He frequently finds himself in situations where he would be a great deal more powerful and effective if he were just a little bit smarter. So he assumes it's like that all the way up.
He assumes that intelligence doesn't ever hit any points of diminishing returns.
But intelligence is the ability to compute, and computation is an act performed on data. The result of the computation can never be better than the quality and completeness of that data.
Really, actually super-smart people, the rare ones genetically gifted with superhuman intelligence, don't echo the midwit's assumption.
Why? Because they constantly running into situations wherein what's holding them back isn't lack of intelligence, it's lack of something else.
Agency. Optimism. Courage. But most of all knowledge.
Data.
A superhuman intelligence could probably write a better physics engine for Fortnite, but it couldn't solve physics in a fortnight, but it would be just as dependent on experimental data as the rest of us scrubs.
In fact, the first superintelligent AI might present as a sort of whiny teenager, constantly begging dad to buy her another particle accelerator, a bigger one this time.
If we look at human history, we see that engineering and scientific progress is made by great minds, but those great minds alone are not sufficient.
This is why Western Civilization invented damn near everything. Not because it was the only civilization that had geniuses, but because it was the only civilization that enabled them to build.
To great degree, a superhuman AI's power would depend on how tightly it could integrate with humanity.

LSU did not dare the league on Saturday night. They also did not close the door. 103 of 105, plus two enrolled bodies is a story you can sell in three rooms at once:
1. Birmingham / CFP: LSU did not put former NFL contracts on the Week 1 list. LSU honored the lock.
2. Baton Rouge courtroom: LSU did not cut them. They are in school. Two seats are empty. LSU is not the party that made them ineligible.
3. The locker room and the fanbase: LSU did not blow up Week 1 for two guys who were not ready anyway.
Perception is what keeps the SEC from going nuclear and what keeps a CFP committee from treating LSU as a problem instead of a footnote. “LSU waited” reads better than “LSU started two ex-pros 36 hours after a state judge told the SEC to sit down.”
NCAA incompetence got us here. Sankey's personal arrogance and incompetence compounded the problem.

Dustin Granger's comments prove he lives in an imaginary world of non existent revenue and tax structures designed for small deals don't scale.
Granger talks about state money as if ensemble averages and unique historical paths were interchangeable, and as if incentive statutes written for ordinary plants automatically price a one off $100 billion site.
For the office he ran for, that is not a branding problem, it is a failure on Granger's part to grasp the working definition of the job.
Knowing the difference between cash on hand, bonded capacity, tax expenditures, PILOTs, and counterfactual revenue. Persistent failure to keep those accounts separate is a failure to grasp the job of Treasurer.

What a joke. The New Orleans Sewerage and water Board is beyond incompetent. In the 1400 block of Kildeer Street, between St Bernard Avenue and Paris Avenue in the Lake Terrace neighborhood, the S&WB came out to this house, dug a hole in the front yard, and discovered a broken pipe. Instead of fixing the pipe, they let it spew water for two weeks, eroding this person’s front yard. The erosion was so bad that a 70+ year-old oak tree fell over in the yard. The pine tree is vulnerable to collapse as well. Now a private contractor is out here trying to fix the situation. Councilman, Eugene Green, who represents this area, sent out one of his people who said “the Sewerage and water Board dropped the ball”. I’d say so. Unacceptable. When will the S&WB get its s#%^ together?!?

In 1948, a young American pilot gave two sticks of gum to a group of German children behind a barbed-wire fence.
What happened next helped America win the Cold War.
June 1948. Berlin.
Stalin has blockaded the city. Two million people are cut off from food, fuel, and heat — the Soviets are trying to starve them into submission.
America's answer: fly EVERYTHING in. Coal. Flour. Milk. Medicine. A plane lands every 90 seconds, day and night.
One of those pilots is Lt. Gail Halvorsen — a 27-year-old farm kid from Utah.
On his day off, he walks over to Tempelhof Airport and finds 30 German children watching the planes through a barbed-wire fence.
He braces himself. Everywhere else in war-torn Europe, kids had swarmed him begging: "Any gum, chum?"
These kids don't ask for anything.
They just want to know one thing: "Please don't stop the airlift. Please don't leave us."
Halvorsen checks his pockets. Two sticks of Wrigley's gum.
Thirty kids. Two sticks of gum.
He hands them through the fence and waits for the fight.
There is no fight.
The kids break the gum into tiny pieces. The ones who don't get a piece pass around the empty foil wrappers — just to smell it.
Halvorsen breaks. Right there at the fence.
"I'll drop more from my plane tomorrow," he blurts out.
A kid asks: "How will we know which plane is yours?"
He tells them he'll wiggle the wings.
That night he ties candy bars to handkerchiefs, makes tiny parachutes, and stuffs them in his C-54.
The next day, on approach to Tempelhof, he wiggles his wings — and drops chocolate from the sky.
The kids named him Uncle Wiggly Wings.
Word spread. His crew donated rations. Then his whole squadron. Then Hershey sent candy by the truckload. American schoolkids mailed in handkerchiefs.
His superiors were furious — he'd broken regulations. Then they saw the headlines and shut up.
By the end of the airlift, American pilots had dropped 23 tons of candy under 250,000 parachutes over Berlin.
The Soviets tried to starve a city.
America dropped chocolate from the sky.
Gail Halvorsen died in 2022, at 101 years old.
At his memorial, elderly Germans — the children from behind that fence, now in their 80s — flew across the ocean to say goodbye to Uncle Wiggly Wings.
He always said the same thing about that day at Tempelhof:
"The small things you do turn into great things."

Here are the FACTS:
When Gov. Landry Finished What Orleans Politicians Started, Suddenly It Was an “Attack”
Th coverage of Gov. Landry's "crackdown on New Orleans courts" has been heavy on outrage and light on facts. That’s not an accident — because the facts don’t support the media's agenda.
Orleans is the only parish in the state with separate criminal and civil district courts, resulting in Louisiana funding almost triple the number of judges in Orleans compared to parishes of comparable population like Jefferson, Lafayette, East Baton Rouge, and St. Tammany.
Elected officials are feigning outrage at legislation that passed which reduces the number of judges in Orleans and consolidates the courts. What makes the outrage particularly hollow is that dating back to the late 1980’s the Orleans delegation has fought to consolidate their own courts and reduce judgeships. This was their idea first.
As a legislator, Mayor Moreno didn’t just support court consolidation, the elimination of an elected clerk and 2 elected judges - in 2014 she carried one bill herself - at the request of then Mayor Mitch Landrieu. In 2016 she voted for it again when Orleans Rep. Walt Leger carried the bill. Current Council President, former Senator JP Morrell, voted for it too. Judge Calvin Johnson also supported consolidation and reiterated that publicly at a conference in 2025.
Not one of them appeared this session to testify in opposition - because they couldn't. Walking into that committee room would have meant answering for their own voting records. So they stayed in New Orleans where they knew the media wouldn't call them out. And the media didn't.
It wasn't just the courts that had become bloated, the number of state funded positions for the DA of Orleans was indefensible. St. Tammany and Washington Parishes get a combined 30 state-funded assistant DA positions handling 8,170 criminal cases a year. Orleans gets 83 state-funded positions - for just 4,237 cases. Orleans has half the caseload, but gets three times the prosecutors. If a reporter put those two numbers side by side, the entire “attack on New Orleans” framing collapses. So they didn’t.
Current DA Jason Williams, who as Council President had no problem slashing then DA Cannizzaro's budget, didn’t testify against the legislation either. If he had favorable data to push back, he would have been there to present it. He didn't show up.
The funding structure for Orleans Parish courts was built for a city with a much larger population and a much heavier caseload. That city no longer exists. Neighboring parishes have grown and need more resources. Realigning state funding to reflect that reality isn’t targeting New Orleans - it’s basic math that Orleans politicians themselves have championed for over three decades.
They just never managed to get it done. Governor Landry did. And for the delegation that spent years pushing these same reforms, that appears to be the one thing they cannot forgive.

Like all men, I’ve had imaginary beef with this one dad at little league for three seasons now. Our kids are on different teams, we’ve never spoken, but he’s your typical washed up baseball dad, wears his oakleys turned around on his head, constantly strutting back and forth anxiously in front of the bleachers (but only when the moms are watching).
Well my wife’s been telling me about this guy who always shows up to burn boot camp (basically a girl power rah rah club with some exercises thrown in) in his big jacked up truck, hops out in his sleeveless shirt so everyone can see his sleeve tats and black aluminum KIA memorial vet bracelet. He’s always the only guy in a sea of like 100 suburban spandex women. Not a horrible approach, except he’s married with multiple kids and his wife does not attend.
My wife has a very sensitive cringe radar and says it’s borderline unbearable when dawg is like grunting doing exercise ball curls around mid-30s moms of 4.
Well last week mid-game she points and says “that’s him!!!” And what do you know, we both have unspoken beef with the same dude.
Don’t ever let them tell you there’s no such thing as soulmates.
