Great visit to Baildon Hall (now a social club) on Saturday. A largely C17 stone house with C19 alterations, incorporating a C15 timber-framed wing. An earlier screens passage still survives inside.

Wales is great for buildings archaeology: early vernacular architecture specialists like Lord Raglan, St Fagans museum (📸) & very accurate listing entries... but there are currently no Welsh dates on The Buildings Archaeologist book tour 🥲 Anyone know some events organisers?

Spent much of this week on an archaeological survey of a Nottinghamshire mediaeval hall house built from trees felled in 1497 and 1500. It is one of those properties that looks entirely Victorian from the exterior but gives up its secrets the moment you step over the threshold...

I'm really looking forward to talking folklore at this online event on 2 April. I've found an understanding of folk tradition hugely enriches the study of ancient buildings because it informs us about how people thought about them. Bookings here: eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-folkl…

Keen garderobe-gogglers may be interested to learn that I've spent part of today writing a good chunky section on latrines for The Buildings Archaeologist book, including this reconstructed one in the parlour chamber of Bayleaf (now at the Weald & Downland Living Museum).

The cottages/shops being re-thatched are Nos. 50, 52, & 54, Botanic Road, Churchtown, Southport, Lancashire. This picture was taken in 2010. There are many thatched buildings in Southport. @VArchGroup @YorksVernacular

Buildings That I'm Thinking About 1/2: Old Hall Farm, Kneesall (Notts), dated c 1536. One of the earliest lobby entrance buildings - in which the doorway opens into a lobby defined by the side of the chimney. Not found commonly in houses until later 16thC in SE England.

The algorithms are making it a lot harder to spread the word about these online talks. Although numbers are still reasonable, it would be a great help if folk were able to give the 30 December event a quick share 🙂 Booking available here: eventbrite.co.uk/e/buildings…

The traditional "Button Houses" (Düğmeli Evler) found in the village of Ormana, located in the Taurus Mountains of Antalya, Türkiye 🇹🇷. These unique structures are renowned for their distinctive architectural style and construction methods. The houses are built using local materials, primarily stone and cedar wood, without the use of cement or mortar. A framework of interlocking cedar beams is used, with the ends of the beams protruding from the stone walls, resembling buttons, which gives the houses their name.  This specific construction technique is earthquake-resistant and has allowed many of these houses to stand for centuries, with some being 400-500 years old. Standing for centuries, these houses represent the cultural heritage and timeless craftsmanship of Taurus mountains. Ormana has been recognized as a UN Tourism Best Tourism Village for its commitment to sustainable tourism and the preservation of this cultural heritage. 📷© Architecture Hub #drthehistories
