Mycorrhizal research now: from the micro- to the macro-scale

🍄 The #mycorrhizal symbiosis: research frontiers
🍄 Microbe-dependent and independent nutrient acquisition
🍄 The #hyphosphere core #microbiome

ALT Cover of New Phytologist 242:2. View of the soil mycorrhizal community in a hypothetical forest dominated by oak species associated with different types of mycorrhizal fungi that form separate underground networks (MN) that may possibly be used to transport amino acids, carbohydrates, fatty acids, signaling microRNAs or peptides and hormones.

Plant communication encompasses both aboveground and belowground interactions.
A new #SciencePerspective argues for more research on what happens belowground, which has thus far received less exploration. scim.ag/6II

New Perspective: "Mycoheterotrophy in the wood-wide web" rdcu.be/dFvnV
"The prevalence and potential functions of common mycorrhizal networks have been increasingly capturing the interest of science and society, sometimes leading to hyperbole and misinterpretation."
Our perspective: Mycoheterotrophy in the wood-wide web, just published in @NaturePlants

Tiputinia foetida is an extremely rare insect pollinated parasitic plant that feeds on mycelium instead of photosynthesizing energy with chlorophyll. Known only from Ecuador and Peru, only three other observations of this species are on iNaturalist.

New in @Nature, we show that commonly applied approaches have failed to accurately represent global trends in biodiversity. So what's the problem and what's the solution?

The wood wide web - the idea that trees communicate with each other through an underground fungal network – has enchanted the public.
But some ecologists think its scientific basis has been oversold go.nature.com/3vrZ0gS

Found a couple plants of the amazing ghostwort (Aneura mirabilis) a few days ago at a site last recorded in 1988. Not the most photogenic examples I've seen of this mycoheteroptrophic liverwort but a thrill to see every time nonetheless.
