Pocono Mountains Regional Airport near Mt. Pocono reached freezing for the first time this year just before 1 AM EDT (midnight EST), making October 6th the official first freeze there. This is a few days earlier than the 1991-2020 average date of October 9th.

Sound up! Incredible video from a viewer fishing about 50 miles offshore in the Gulf. They were about 10 miles from a thunderstorm when they heard clicking and saw blue electrical arcs coming from the boat’s metal rod holders. They were even getting shocked touching the metal. That’s St. Elmo’s Fire — a corona discharge caused by a strong electric field around the storm. It’s fascinating to see and hear, but also a warning: the atmosphere is highly electrically charged. On a boat, that’s not something you want to hang around and watch. At all. They did the right thing and headed back in at max speed and away from the thunderstorm!📷Scott Gilligan #Florida

Updates will be provided this evening on the evolution of this weekend's Nor'Easter, which is set to impact most of our region beginning late tomorrow evening and lasting through the end of the weekend. Highest impacts will be found along the coasts, where rainfall, beach erosion, coastal and/or tidal flooding, and high wind gusts up to 60mph are all possible, especially on Long Island and coastal Southern New England. Power outages will be possible in these communities. Farther inland, we're looking at the potential for some steady periods of rain as far west as I-81 in PA. Plenty of lift and frontogenesis will be present across extreme EPA/NJ/SNY/SNE. All depends on how banding evolves west of the Delaware River. Subsidence will be present just to the west. There will be a sharp cutoff in rain totals due to subsidence, but at the moment, we're looking at around 1" for most of New Jersey, and New York City around 2" for the Jersey Shore, Long Island, and coastal Southern New England, and perhaps more in Southeastern Massachusetts. We'll continue to provide the latest information and update the forecast accordingly. #pawx #njwx #nywx #ctwx #riwx #mawx
