Rebekah had firmly resolved to spend this evening in peace. A glass of bourbon. No family. No witches. No men who thought they could make her life even more complicated. Then she heard that voice. Of course, “Salvatore.” Rebekah rolled her eyes even before she turned to face @diabolicalslvtr . Her gaze slowly swept over him before she exhaled with a gesture of annoyance. “I should have known that a pleasant evening was too much to ask for.”

Rebekah watched as Stefan calmly poured himself a bourbon and simply rolled her eyes at his little charade. “Oh, Stefan. How convincing.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “You don’t like me, but here you are, of your own free will, in my house, drinking my bourbon, and suddenly wanting to talk about our past together.” A dry laugh escaped her. “You used to be a better liar.” But when he mentioned the 1920s and their love back then, her amused smile vanished. Not out of hurt—but rather out of disinterest. “The ’20s?” Rebekah shrugged. “I’m not interested in that time anymore.” She stepped closer and, without hesitation, took the bourbon bottle from his hand to pour herself a drink. “Yes, I remember us. I remember that I loved you. And maybe your little charade would even have impressed me back then.” She took a sip and then looked at Stefan with complete composure. “But that was back then.” A confident smile flitted across her lips. “I’m with someone else now.”Rebekah raised her glass pointedly. “Here’s to someone who’s a better match for me. To someone who doesn’t constantly remind me of what could have been between us a hundred years ago.” She tilted her head and looked Stefan straight in the face. “So if you came here to throw me off balance with memories of our great love, darling, then you’re about a century too late.” Rebekah walked past him, deliberately brushing against his shoulder. “You must really miss the 1920s.” A satisfied grin followed. “I don’t miss them.”

“No. Don’t even ask.” Rebekah sighed deeply, took a few steps across the room, and ran her fingers through her hair in frustration. “That self-righteous, paranoid, control-freak bastard!” she muttered.

Rebekah’s eyebrows shot up immediately. “Of course he does.” She laughed softly, almost in disbelief. “A living blade that’s also his soul and knows more about him than he does himself. Just when I thought your family couldn’t possibly get any more complicated.” But her mocking tone quickly gave way to genuine curiosity. Rebekah crossed her arms and studied Crimsonfang intently. “But if this blade is actually a part of Cole—his soul—then that means this knowledge already exists somewhere within him. It’s just that Cole himself doesn’t have access to it yet.” She tilted her head thoughtfully. “And it hasn’t revealed itself to him yet.” There was a brief pause. “Why?”

Rebekah closed the door behind Stefan and watched him go with a raised eyebrow. “No ‘thank you’?” She cast a meaningful glance over her shoulder—toward where he had walked past her—and then back at him. “And then you bump into me, too. Your manners have really gone downhill, Stefan.”

“Are you trying to tell me that Cole set up this system himself … but maybe didn’t even realize why he did it?”

Rebekah leaned against the doorframe and eyed Stefan for a few seconds, one eyebrow raised. “Did you say ‘please’?” An amused smile played on her lips. “How polite of you, Stefan. It’s almost as if you suspect I’d otherwise slam the door in your face.” She let him wait a moment longer before finally stepping aside to make room for him. “All right, then. Come in“
