It was an absolute honour to receive the Chief of Air Staff Commendation from Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari yesterday. This is in recognition of me promoting IAF for more than two and half decades through my lens. Was also honoured to welcome him at my pvt aviation museum.

India needs to initiate a dedicated project to develop an indigenous short-range air-to-air missile. Python-5 and ASRAAM are fine, but this is one category where India can realistically build its own system relatively quickly by leveraging the ecosystem we already have across DRDO, seekers, propulsion, electronics and missile integration. My photos and write up originally posted in my FB page.
Anna doing Anna things Operating on short, tabletop, PSP sheet runways surrounded by mountains on three sides isn’t for the faint-hearted. IAF transport crew have distinguished themselves by navigating through narrow valleys and not so great weather conditions to keep air maintenance going – both for the local populace and for the soldiers manning our borders. This has become their routine. The runway invariably will be unidirectional, and the airstrip may have limited or no parking facility. Here are a couple of photos – AN-32 awaits cargo on the grass cum PSP runway, and gathers speed in another as she takes off. Pictures to some extent tell you the story while the experience is unmatched. Can’t be described. - Sanjay Simha

Best aviation calendar. I am one of the lucky ones to get it every year. Each year it's worth collecting and preserving for the future.

Fabulous photos shared by Sanjay Simha, taken by his father, Mr TL Ramaswamy, in June 1982 — the maiden flight of the first Indian assembled Jaguar. Still in primer, piloted by HAL Chief Test Pilot Wg Cdr MW Tilak. Ferried out to Ambala on 21 Sep 1982, and still in service!

Despite having done many displays and also trained others in the role, I prefer to withhold my views on the causes of Tejas crash, till I see the FDR. Quite surprised by the confidence with which some ‘experts’ are jumping the gun.

Long before the C-130s of 2025, and long after the C-119 and Dakota of 1962, Nyoma had another milestone. On 5 Feb 2015 the LCH made its first “cold” landing here, wrapped in snow and dust. The moment was frozen forever by @VelocityTTL, who fought the elements to get this frame. #IAFHistory
Nyoma: correcting the record on the first fixed-wing landing. In recent coverage of the @IAF_MCC newest airbase at Nyoma, media reports have claimed that the first fixed-wing landing took place in 2009. The record shows the story begins much earlier, in the winter of 1962. The first recorded landing was by a Dakota of No. 43 Squadron, captained by Flt Lt AL Mendanha (4710). The squadron’s Operations Record Book notes the landing in the quarter of December 1962, though it does not specify the exact date. On completion, one of the Dakota’s engines failed to start for the return leg, necessitating an on-site engine change. The second landing followed as part of the recovery effort. On 22 Dec 1962, a C-119G Fairchild Packet of No. 19 Squadron, equipped with the J-19 jet-assisted take-off (JATO) packs, landed at Nyoma Rap. The aircraft was captained by then Sqn Ldr Prabhakar Shankar Dere (3883). It brought in the replacement engine and an HAL servicing party. A contemporaneous photograph from the Dere family collection shared by his son, Maj Gen Anil Dere shows Sqn Ldr PS Dere standing in the left foreground at Nyoma, corroborating the sortie and date. After these evaluations, Nyoma Rap was judged unsuitable for continued fixed-wing operations at that time, and no further landings were undertaken in that phase. For his wider work in Ladakh, Flt Lt AL Mendanha was awarded the Vayu Sena Medal; his citation references “proving flights to our most difficult and advanced landing grounds in this area”. #IAFHistory
