NAY PYI TAW — Despite receiving an official invitation from the Philippines, the current ASEAN Chair, for the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) held in Cebu on 27–28 October 2026, the Union Minister for Defence of Myanmar declined to attend in person, opting instead to send the Myanmar Military Attaché based in Manila to represent the Ministry. ---#WhatsHappeningInMyanmar The decision stems from disagreements over the draft joint declaration. The Ministry of Defence strongly objected to two specific paragraphs containing political pressure points and references to the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus (5PC) that are unrelated to defense matters. Myanmar requested the removal of these paragraphs; however, as the request was not granted, Myanmar refrained from ministerial-level participation due to the breach of ASEAN's consensus principle. --- The Myanmar Government reaffirms its firm foreign policy position: while Myanmar desires normal relations with ASEAN, it categorically rejects politicized pressure and violations of the ASEAN Charter. Myanmar continues to maintain positive bilateral relations with individual member states on an equal, case-by-case basis, with several member nations showing understanding toward Myanmar’s principled stance.
