On this day 22 years ago, my dad passed away. One year later I wrote the poem below to honor him. It's called Ten twenty-three (10/23), today's date.
Ten twenty-three, a personal tsunami,
no miracle in store,
A river of tears, countless fears,
my heart stops with yours.
Trapped in such ridiculous pain,
Yearning just to breathe again,
Hopelessly wondering, what purpose faith?
Hold on, change is comin’,
ten twenty-three returns,
Grief receding, heart starts beating,
but pain inside still burns,
Deepest, darkest chasm crossed,
Missing future memories lost,
Resurrection hope glimmers from depths within.
Relentless time still marches on,
one year becomes five.
Life’s returned to life again, not coping to survive.
A bruised and battered heart’s renewed,
Sorrow now crushed by gratitude,
For the gift you were and where you are.
One more time, it’ll come around,
a day of great reverse,
Darkness banished by holy light,
breaking through death’s curse,
Restored to our original state,
On golden streets we’ll celebrate,
Forevermore no pain or fear,
Life’s mysteries made crystal clear,
All wrongs righted, reunited,
on my ten twenty-three.

If I still lived in Minnesota, Michele would have my vote!
Over 40,000 views on this Tweet and not ONE comment of support for you, @peggyflanagan. Not one.
Contrast that with @Michele_Tafoya, and the choice becomes clear.
Minnesota is ready for a change.

Packers my team, last week was frustrating, seemed as if the refs called penalties until the Vikings scored..My opinion, gambling will ruin Pro Football, and College Football and Basketball..

This might be the first time ever that bad officiating worked IN the Vikings favor....SKOL...!!!

Happy heavenly birthday to Neil Peart...🥁
Known as “The Professor,” Neil was one of the greatest drummers in rock history and the man behind the lyrics to so many of Rush’s iconic songs. His incredible talent,
and passion for music made him truly one of a kind.
Today we celebrate Neil, his music and the incredible legacy he left behind...🥁🤍

Thank you to all friends & followers for your amazing words I am so grateful for the outpouring of love on SM & texts. I love you all. here's a great shot of the 🌈 breaking through, I snapped the other day. More to come
Been listening to her Rockstar album the last couple days. Unreal how in her late 70’s she could bring fresh perspectives to so many songs I love. Great duets and solo performances.
Blessed to attend another excellent @AbundantMines masterclass with @Beau_Turner21 and @JeffBooth this afternoon. Great conversation and information. Thank you both, will now have to re-read Jeff's @priceoftomorrow!
Vivien's post brought to mind the eulogy I wrote for Neil. It has the title, "The Enemy Within." Here it is.
His peers voted him the best drummer in the world numerous times. He wrote intelligent, poignant lyrics for twenty studio albums in his 40+ year career with / one of my favorite bands, Rush. He is my all-time favorite drummer. His lyrics connected with me on a deep level. Yet his drumming and lyric writing are merely part of his impact.
Since hearing Friday's news of Neil “The Professor” Peart’s death, I’ve spent hours listening to Rush albums. Part of Rush's “Fear” trilogy named “The Enemy Within” keeps repeating:
"I'm not giving in to security under pressure
I'm not missing out on the promise of adventure
I'm not giving up on implausible dreams
Experience to extremes
Experience to extremes”
These lyrics accurately reflect Neil Peart’s life approach. He once rode his bicycle across west Africa. Rather than flying between gigs, he often rode his motorcycle between cities where Rush performed. Each day he would ask himself, “what’s the most excellent thing I can do today?” He then chose his motorcycle routes accordingly.
And he was dedicated to his craft. Even while generally considered the world’s best rock drummer, he continued taking lessons from legendary drum instructor Freddie Gruber. He agonized over Rush's lyrics, never accepting less than his best effort for himself or his fans. This passion and dedication brings to mind the biblical urging, "whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
While he eventually succumbed to an enemy within, brain cancer (glioblastoma) claiming his life, he rejected fear, the true enemy within. He pursued excellence. He sought adventure. He pursued implausible dreams. He experienced to extremes. He fit several lifetimes into his 67 years.
Neil Peart was a teacher at heart, his “Professor” moniker well earned. And The Professor left a brilliant legacy of facing down the enemy within.
Suspicious looking stranger
Flashes you a dangerous grin
Shadows across your window
Was it only trees in the wind?
Every breath a static charge
A tongue that tastes like tin
Steely-eyed outside to hide The Enemy Within…
