Lupin must have been absolutely losing it when he taught at Hogwarts.
We see everything through Harry’s perspective, so it’s easy to remember Lupin as this calm, patient and collected teacher.
But think about what was actually happening in his life.
He was only around 33–34, had spent most of his life dealing with being a werewolf and the isolation that came with it, and had finally been given a chance to return to the one place where he had actually been happy.
Except Hogwarts was also filled with ghosts from his past.
Sirius Black, his old best friend who everyone believed had betrayed the Potters, was back and supposedly hunting James’s son.
Then Lupin meets Harry, who looks almost exactly like James, plays Quidditch like him, but has Lily’s eyes.
Snape is there too, the person he spent his school years antagonising, and somehow Snape is now the one brewing the Wolfsbane Potion that Lupin depends on every month.
And Dumbledore, the man Lupin owes so much to, is trying to protect Harry from Sirius

when remus is drunk he goes on a rant about welsh history and welsh subjugation, slurring and pointing an angry, wobbly finger at james as if he personally suppressed the entire country.
to placate him, james attempts to (very badly) sing the welsh anthem in solidarity
