Letβs stop using the word βhomeworkβ & βclass workβ, and instead call it βpracticeβ. Stop categorizing learning activities by the location where itβs supposed to take place, & instead name it for its purpose.

Admin, don't let students be the only reason teachers stay. Make sure you are a reason they want to be at your school too. Leadership matters!

Kohn argued schools promote a kind of conditional acceptance when they elevate achievement and obedience rather than building community and relationships. Unconditional teachers accept students for who they are, not what they do.

The message of unconditional positive regard is, "I care about you. You have value. You donβt have to do anything to prove it to me, and nothingβs going to change my mind." @AlexSVenet

Remember that just because someone is in a leadership role, doesn't mean that they don't get stressed, burned out, or have self doubts at time. They are still part of the team and need encouragement and grace sometimes too!

Just a reminder that there is overwhelming research showing homework does little to improve achievement and can actually have negative effects. Recess however has many positive effects such as improved self regulation of emotions, improved interpersonal skills and focus!

It makes me sad when a teacher assistant says βIβm just a paraβ when they introduce themselves to meβ¦we CANNOT do our jobs without support staff. They are the backbones of our schools. No one is βjustβ anything on your staff. Make sure your support staff feel encouraged & loved.

ALT βGiving students the opportunity to earn elective credits for their after-school and summer jobs validates the important role that work plays in their growth and development, and will hopefully encourage more young people to get a start on acquiring the important life skills that are gained through work experience.β - Dave Mastin, Vice President of Government Affairs for the Association of Washington Business

Teacher effectiveness is not greatly improved by curriculum, new programs, or initiatives. But, when teachers are respected, valued, supported, & feel like their talents are utilized, then morale increases, job engagement soars, & students benefit too!

#ICYMI: The first time @KelsoSchools students meet with their Graduation Success Coach, itβs unlikely theyβll talk about academics. Instead, the focus is on getting to know the students & understanding their challenges.
