‘Near Panic’ in Moscow 14th October 1941: As the German spearhead approaches the Soviet authorities begin evacuating the capital ,open.substack.com/pub/ww2tod… The defence of Moscow was led by a Red Army General who had been arrested in the purges but refused to sign a false confession despite torture. Konstantin Rokossovsky suffered sustained severe injuries, including broken and denailed fingers, pulled teeth, cracked ribs, and mock shooting ceremonies after being arrested in 1937. After being rehabilitated in 1940, he remained loyal to Russia and became one of the Red Army’s most talented commanders.
