The irony around the order selection of the presentations on climate responsibility in sports (specifically events) is not lost here... #ptg2024

Climate strike week 278. The final outcome of #COP28 is not a “historic win”, it is yet another example of extremely vague and watered down texts full of loopholes that in no way is even close to being sufficient for staying within the 1,5° limit and ensure climate justice. 1/3🧵

Should someone tell @UEFA that you don't need to artificially increase greenhouse gas emissions to provide clubs with and ask them to use a carbon calculator? @DaveyLockwood & @matthicksonn on #football’s increasing impact on the #climate: bbc.co.uk/sport/football/671…
I spoke to UEFA Sustainability chief Michele Uva as BBC finds its expansion of club football, with 177 more games from next season, could see approx 2 BILLION air miles flown annually, equating to release of nearly 1/2 MILLION tonnes of greenhouse gas ⬇️ bbc.co.uk/sport/football/671…

MAJOR UPDATE: All planetary boundaries are assessed, and six are crossed. For the first time ever, scientists have quantified all nine planetary boundaries. Six of them are already transgressed and we are increasing pressure on the others. Read more: buff.ly/45Ps1QG

This week's ISSA conference in Ottawa added new perspectives from many great scholars. I also got the privilege to present the first article in my thesis on ‘Regenerating the pitch: Contesting environmental discourses in football'. Next up: Montreal -Toronto - Vancouver 📷

This one really made me think today.. Thanks @BenMole11 @smcidle!
The convergence of sport, decoloniality, and the environment presents a labyrinth of intricate ideas, and as we delve into their interconnectedness, the complexity deepens.

1. Global warming will continue until we reach net-zero. 2. The climate consequences will keep getting worse until we reach net-zero. 3. After reaching net-zero we will have to live and suffer in a warmer world for generations. Do we act now or delay further?

The #GreenFootballWeekend impact report is out. In addition to many lessons learned, our findings tie in with existing academic & practical knowledge. They also prove that more can & must be done in football than relying on offsets and projects prioritising donations > action.
Proud to have helped unleash the power of football to tackle climate change! #GreenFootballWeekend united 80+ clubs & fans. It showed fans overwhelming support for their clubs to make real efforts to make football more sustainable. Count Us In & @Rare_org tinyurl.com/2yv3xzfu

Structural change is required and #football fans need to see such changes happening. Telling us that #sustainability is a concern and acting against it week after week (not only) risks people turning away in anger/remaining inactive. Start taking this seriously and act on it!
The Premier League domestic flights dilemma. Is it time for football across the globe to talk about fixing its footprint - there are bigger issues facing football but the Premier League attracts attention like little else - Thanks to my colleague @danroan

Football is important, what football does is important, but maybe what football doesn’t do is also important ! It has such a special and privileged place in people’s hearts, in popular culture in business and in society all across the globe 🧵 1/5 bbc.co.uk/sport/football/650…

I said what I said. Great work by @BBCSport to map out flights ✈️ in pro football over the last two months. An additional #hottake: - Flying is more comfy & fancy, but there's no good argument that it's better for performance. Not when ground transport options only add 2-3hrs
‼️ In My Opinion: All short journeys to sporting events should be done using ground travel. Dr Madeleine Orr is a sport ecologist at Loughborough University. She says that switching to ground transport would help save the planet. @BBCSounds

Leading question in light of the latest IPCC report released this week; are we doing enough? Guess there are not just (inter)national governments that need to reconsider their strategies and efforts shortly.. bbc.com/sport/football/65017…
