Strengthening the capacity of early-career researchers is one of the most sustainable ways to advance evidence-informed policy and practice. This week, #IamAPHRC hosted a four-day masterclass on Social Exclusion in Adolescent Research, bringing together early-career public health researchers and policy practitioners.
The workshop equipped participants with practical skills for designing, conducting, analyzing, and translating high-quality research on adolescent social exclusion. Through interactive discussions, hands-on learning, and peer engagement, they explored adolescent-centered research methods, research ethics, equity and intersectionality, policy engagement, knowledge translation, and research leadership.
During the sessions, participants discussed how research can better capture the lived realities of marginalized adolescents, including pregnant and parenting adolescents, adolescents with disabilities, and those living in low-resource settings.

Early adolescence is where futures are formed and gender norms take hold. Today, APHRC is meeting with representatives from counties across Kenya to launch a study on how gender norms affect youth aged 10–14.
The study, which will run for the next five years, is part of a broader conversation on gender-transformative research that identifies and challenges harmful norms while informing programs and policies that promote equality and opportunity for all young people.
