Tokenized deposits may be moving faster than stablecoins in the UAE, at least when it comes to institutional adoption.
HSBC and Ant International have completed real-time AED and USD tokenized deposit transactions in the UAE, making Ant the first Middle East client to use HSBC’s Tokenized Deposit Service.
But the bigger story goes beyond HSBC.
Citi has also expanded tokenized deposit infrastructure into the UAE, while First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB), Mashreq and Swift are advancing parallel initiatives aimed at bringing commercial bank money onto blockchain-based settlement rails.
That creates an important distinction.
Stablecoins need to build issuance, distribution, liquidity, custody and acceptance networks around a new digital asset.
Tokenized deposits start with something banks already have: clients, deposits, compliance relationships, treasury infrastructure and balance sheets.
For institutional finance, that may prove to be the shorter route to programmable money.
The UAE is now seeing three forms of digital money evolve in parallel: the Digital Dirham, regulated stablecoins and tokenized commercial bank deposits.
The question may no longer be which one wins.
It may be which one becomes the preferred form of money for each layer of the financial system.

U.S. crypto legislation may be stalled, but @circle isn’t waiting.
Just one day after the Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act, Circle opened Arc, its own permissioned Layer 1 built around USDC and designed for institutional financial activity.
With institutions including BlackRock, DTCC, Visa and Mastercard among its validators, Arc represents something bigger than another blockchain launch: Circle is moving from issuing digital dollars to building the infrastructure through which they move.
The bigger question now is whether institutions will favor Circle’s vertically integrated model, or continue building on neutral networks such as Ethereum and Canton.
The battle for the next generation of financial infrastructure is moving from who issues the money to who controls the rails.

@StanChart is expanding its institutional crypto offering into the #UAE.
The bank has launched deliverable #Bitcoin and #Ether spot trading through its @DIFC -regulated operation, making it the first G-SIB to offer institutional digital asset spot trading in the country.
The move builds on its #UAE digital asset custody service launched in 2024 and follows its institutional #BTC and #ETH trading launch in the #UK in 2025.
The bigger story: #StandardChartered is increasingly building digital assets into its existing banking infrastructure — from #custody and #trading to broker-dealer services and #tokenization.

#FAB says it is the first bank in the #MiddleEast and #Africa to reach the milestone.

Issuing a token is only the beginning.
What happens over the next five, seven or ten years is where institutional tokenization gets much more complicated.
Who calculates NAV? Who reconciles on-chain activity with the books? Who keeps the legal investor record accurate? Who handles distributions, redemptions and corporate actions when the asset is already live?
In her contribution to the Unlock Thought Leadership Series, Christiane El Habre, Regional Managing Director Middle East and Global Head of Family Offices at Apex Group Ltd looks at the part of tokenization that gets far less attention than issuance: the asset-servicing infrastructure needed to make tokenized markets work day after day.
The piece explores how fund administration, transfer agency, reconciliation, governance and lifecycle servicing may need to evolve as tokenized and conventional assets increasingly sit within the same operating environment.
Because proving that an asset can be issued on-chain is one thing. Building the machinery that keeps it running reliably at institutional scale is another.

#Regulation is increasingly becoming part of the stablecoin distribution strategy.
@BitcoinCom is adding #UAE-regulated #USDU to its self-custodial wallet through a partnership with #ADGM-based Universal Digital Intl.
USDU is regulated by the #FSRA and registered with the #CBUAE as a Foreign Payment Token, with 1:1 USD reserves and monthly independent attestations.
The partnership also targets #payments and stablecoin education.
The bigger shift: regulated stablecoins are moving beyond issuance toward distribution, payments and everyday utility.

The digital euro is moving closer to political reality—but Europe still has not answered the most important question:
Do ordinary citizens actually need it?
Europe already has SEPA, instant bank transfers, contactless cards and mobile wallets that work efficiently. The digital euro is therefore not primarily about faster payments—it is about strengthening Europe's control over its payment infrastructure and reducing reliance on non-European providers such as Visa and Mastercard.
That is a legitimate strategic objective.
But strategic sovereignty alone does not guarantee successful adoption.
For citizens, the digital euro still lacks a clear value proposition. For banks, the business case remains uncertain, requiring significant investment in new infrastructure while potentially affecting card revenues and deposit funding.
The longer-term debate also extends beyond technology. While the current design rejects programmable money, payment infrastructure can outlast governments and policy priorities, raising questions about how future use cases and governance could evolve over time.
As Europe advances its CBDC ambitions, the key challenge is no longer whether a digital euro can be built—but whether it delivers meaningful value beyond existing payment systems while maintaining strong privacy safeguards and sustainable incentives for the banking sector.
