🚨 AMERICA’S NATIONWIDE EMERGENCY ALERT TEST IS SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 17 — AS COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD URGE PEOPLE TO PREPARE FOR DISRUPTIONS.
A routine US emergency broadcast test. A growing global focus on household preparedness. And heightened tensions surrounding the Middle East.
Here’s what’s happening — and what needs to be verified.
🇺🇸 UNITED STATES — NATIONWIDE ALERT TEST
FEMA and the FCC have reportedly scheduled a nationwide Emergency Alert System test for November 17 at 2:20 p.m. ET, with December 3 listed as a backup date.
The test would reach participating television and radio broadcasters, rather than mobile phones. Federal law requires nationwide testing of the system at least once every three years. The previous nationwide test took place in October 2023.
US emergency preparedness guidance also recommends keeping enough food, water and essential supplies to last several days.
🇬🇧 UNITED KINGDOM — BE READY
UK preparedness messaging has encouraged households to consider how they would cope with disruptions to essential services, including water, electricity and communications.
The recommended preparations include drinking water, food that requires little or no cooking, essential medication, a torch and some cash.
🇩🇪 GERMANY: Emergency preparedness guidance recommends supplies for up to 10 days.
🇪🇺 EUROPEAN UNION: Preparedness initiatives have promoted the ability to cope independently for at least 72 hours.
🇯🇵 JAPAN: Households are encouraged to maintain emergency supplies for at least three days, ideally a week.
🇫🇷 FRANCE: Local preparedness campaigns, including in Normandy, have encouraged residents to prepare a 72-hour emergency kit.
Other countries and territories — including Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Estonia, Taiwan, Poland, Denmark, Ireland, Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, Canada, Mexico, Czechia, Austria and Croatia — also have various forms of emergency preparedness guidance.
⚠️ WHY IS PREPAREDNESS GETTING SO MUCH ATTENTION?
Governments face a range of potential emergencies, including extreme weather, cyberattacks, power outages, infrastructure disruptions and geopolitical crises.
Meanwhile, claims have circulated about possible US military action against Iran following the November 3 midterm elections, potential Iranian retaliation against energy infrastructure, and the reported movement of a Patriot air-defence battery from Texas to the Middle East.
These military claims require independent verification. They should not be treated as confirmed plans or as evidence that the US emergency alert test is connected to the situation in the Gulf.
A scheduled emergency alert test is not, by itself, a warning that an attack is imminent. Nationwide tests are designed to check whether emergency communications systems work when they are needed.
📦 WHAT EVERY HOUSEHOLD SHOULD CONSIDER KEEPING READY
💧 Drinking water for several days
🥫 Non-perishable food that requires little or no preparation
🔦 A torch and spare batteries
📻 A battery-powered or wind-up radio
🔋 A charged power bank
💵 Some cash in small denominations
🩹 First-aid supplies and essential medication
📄 Important contacts and information on paper
For water, follow your local emergency authority’s guidance. The amount needed depends on climate, activity and individual circumstances.
📅 NOVEMBER 17: WHAT TO WATCH
The key questions are whether the reported US test date is confirmed by official announcements, whether other countries update their preparedness guidance, and whether credible sources substantiate the claims about possible military escalation.
Prepare sensibly. Check official sources. Separate confirmed announcements from speculation.
Being prepared is practical. Assuming every preparedness announcement signals an imminent conflict is not.
Follow for verified updates as more information becomes available.
