Florida Governor Ron DeSantis:
Some of these Republicans are saying, "Oh, well, the gas, don't worry. It's no big deal." Or they're trying to blame Biden.
No, no. Listen, we've just got to be honest. Gas is higher. It hurts people, working-class people, and it's higher because of the Iran conflict.
That's just the fact. If you can't admit that to voters, then you're gaslighting them, and they're not going to listen to you on other things.

russian bots keep telling me Ukraine was killing russian speakers in Donbas.
Interesting.
I was born in Donbas. In Stakhanov.
I grew up speaking both Ukrainian and russian.
Nobody persecuted me for my language.
Then russia arrived with tanks, bombs, and promises to “save” us.
I lost my home.
But please, random internet expert,
Explain my childhood to me.
I’m sure you know better.

If I went to Russia, I would be jailed and held hostage as a POW for criticizing Russia.
I went to Ukraine as a critic and the President of Ukriane invited me to his palace and allowed me to interview him.
After I interviewed @ZelenskyyUa, Russian state media, which is controlled by Putin and the Kremlin, was calling for me to be assassinated and then they were retweeting IRGC propaganda videos that called for Islamic terrorists to shoot me in the head.
Ukraine and Russia aren’t the same.

Ok, now you could go to Russia and verify what is happening there, problem both sides

This goes beyond ineptitude and into banana republic nonsense.
You cannot simply appoint your mates and ideological fellow travellers to critical national security positions and treat vetting as a “nice to have”. Labour learned nothing from Mandelson.
Jonathan Powell was not vetted before being appointed National Security Adviser, we can report.

Churchill could have shortened WW2 by years if he had just “done a deal” with Hitler. George Washington could have done a deal to end the American Revolution. Zelenskyy is in good company.

This will be difficult to read for some, but given the geopolitical situation we're in, the government's decision to approve drilling at the Jackdaw gas field is the right one. Here's why ⬇️
Wholesale gas prices have reached a four-year high. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has shown again how quickly global supply can be disrupted, and how exposed we are when we depend on other people's gas. After Russia invaded Ukraine, it was families here at home who felt the cost.
With the Strait of Hormuz blocked, the pressure on global energy supplies is only getting worse.
We'll need gas for years yet. No economist, minister or energy specialist will deny that.
The climate concerns are real too, and I agree that new fields cannot become an excuse to slow down on renewable energy. But a credible transition needs a secure pathway to get there. *Security of supply is not the opposite of net zero.*
And here's the environmental contradiction: gas that is liquefied, shipped across the sea and then turned back into gas at home has around *three times the production and transport emissions of gas from the North Sea. An insane practice!*
The choice being made now, and it's the right choice, is whether more of the gas we need is produced here, by British workers on proper wages and with lower production emissions than imported LNG, or shipped in from overseas.
Leaving our own gas in the ground while importing gas doesn't help the planet. It risks simply moving the jobs, the tax revenue and the emissions somewhere else. 🙄
This is a Labour argument. Our movement was built by people who did the hard graft that kept this country going.
We often criticise Thatcher for destroying the mining and steel industries. We need to be careful not to do the same to a critical industry in the midst of a dangerous geopolitical moment.
I know what the North Sea means to the workers and families who have built their lives on this industry.
In my view, a proper transition away from oil and gas means the jobs of tomorrow should arrive before the jobs of today disappear. It also means being realistic about the speed of transition and making sure the skills built in offshore oil and gas are carried over into renewables, rather than written off.
This must be done carefully, balancing energy security with the development of alternative sources of energy.
In the more dangerous world in which we live today, *energy security is national security.* Diversifying our energy supply builds resilience, reduces our vulnerability and makes us more independent.
Today's decision recognises that.

I was also a Captain in Afghanistan in the dismounted close combat role. I never got time off to go to Kabul HQ.
You are dishonest, disrespectful and dishonourable @PeteHegseth
You shame your country as @SecWar
Hegseth on Afghanistan:
I was a captain in Afghanistan, and we would go to the headquarters in Kabul, and there would be 50 flags at the headquarters.
It was a beautiful thing to see 50 different countries contributing to the NATO alliance and the ISAF mission there.
Except there were like maybe five that contributed. It was actually closer to one or two that, by the end, were actually involved in kinetic operations.
In fact, the ISAF patch, we would joke that it meant "I Saw Americans Fighting."
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Over 1100 non-American soldiers from 31 US-allied countries were killed fighting in Afghanistan, approximately 1/3 of the total combat deaths.

This boy and his mother (and others) died today because Trump-Krasnov and Kegseth decided not to give Ukraine warning of Russian missile launchers, so they had no chance to go to the shelters.
It’s one thing not to allow Ukraine to receive Patriot interceptors. It’s another not to provide warnings to Ukrainians of incoming death.
I don’t want to believe that any of my fellow Americans support this despicable behavior

1. Zelenskyy never banned elections. Ukrainian Constitution defined no election during wartime, long long ago.
2. Parliament banned a party that had strong ties with Russia - most of their members ran away to Russia anyway. In fact, there is very vocal opposition present in public debate.
3. Press is not nationalized anyhow. Utter bullshit claim.
4. We banned russian orthodox church which was an arm of Russian intelligence essentially. Ukrainian Orthodox church, Catholic church, mosques, menoras work no problem at all.
