Mental reps on the game mound didn’t ever occur to me in high school.
Then we started doing it in college on away trips and I realized for the first time how different it is to pitch with the backdrop of a stadium compared to a bullpen.
I found it immensely helpful.
Executing pitchers in a controlled bullpen environment doesn’t just automatically transfer to a high pressure game environment with totally different mental, visual, auditory stimuli.
A few differences worth mentioning, that most players take for granted:
-The empty space behind the catcher to the backstop
-Crowd, batter, umpire
-Unique mound characteristics (especially at amateur levels - you probably won’t find a decent mound until college)
All of these factors are unique variables you’re consciously or subconsciously contending with when you are tasked with executing a 3-2 slider on the black.
Does every rep need to be 100% specific to the game environment?
Not necessarily - but if you struggle to transfer your bullpens to the game, start figuring out ways to better familiarize yourself with the environmental piece of the puzzle.
-Dry reps on the game mound
-Bullpens/Live ABs on the game mound
-Stand in hitters and simulated counts in pens
-Catcher calling pitches/randomize order of pitches.
-Heckle pens or other auditory and visual distractions
-Pens while fatigued and with an elevated heart rate
Note: dry reps still have quite a bit of value to work on your pre pitch routine in a more game specific context.
I like to think of this as “eyes open visualization”

I’m not. Will use SpaceX cold gas thruster system with ultra high pressure air in a composite over-wrapped pressure vessel in place of the 2 rear seats.
Milwaukee headed to the World Series. MIL led the MLB in batting avg and was 28th in HR. I thought you had to hit homers to win? Turns out, it’s dominant relievers and teams that put the ball in play!
Crazy to me that people write off BA as a stat that doesn’t matter anymore due to analytical hitting. Guys like Arraez are so undervalued. Guess who led the MLB in team average this year and none of them in top 5 for homers? MIL, TB, LAD…🤔
Everybody loves big-damage swings until a dude built for the playoffs is shoving with 100 at the top of the zone. Live and die by the sword.

I asked Sam Antonacci for his reaction to Murakami's Game 1 HR...and it turns out Sam was in the cage eating an ice cream cone:
"If my name was called & I was eating an ice cream cone I probably would've been in the dog house."
When I told Vargas: "Sam is a child." 😂

Every postseason you see a reliever or two make a big name for themselves. Taylor could certainly be one in 2026.

FR C Maxx Grieme (@HCC_Hawks) took excellent swings all day in G2.
On the barrel the other way here - clean, in rhythm, strong.
Impressed behind the plate - quiet receive, soft hands, above average arm strength.
