Athena disappeared shortly afterward. Investigators later recovered footage from inside the delivery van showing Horner taking the little girl into the vehicle. Audio evidence from the van was also presented in court, revealing disturbing details about her final moments. During the 2026 sentencing trial, forensic psychiatrist testified that Horner admitted to s€xually assaulting Athena before k!lling her. A DNA analyst also testified that male DNA was found on swabs collected during Athena’s s€xual assault examination. The medical examiner found no physical evidence of s€xual trauma, but that did not rule out an assault. Horner initially claimed he had accidentally struck Athena with his vehicle and panicked.
