Thanks so much to @NBCNews for asking me what it's like to live through a historic moment as a historian and how it compares to what I've seen in the past. Like those that have come before us, we know history when we see it, we just don't know how it will turn out yet.
Yesterday's conversation about monuments hosted by @ProfessorEA and @MellonFdn was inspiring. It was good to hear about some tangible steps that people and organizations are taking - both digital and in-person with interpretation and new monuments.
For a few years, conversations about monuments and interpreting public spaces were not just at the forefront of public history work, but deeply on the minds of all historians. I hope that will continue #monumentsmatter
Highlights of yesterday's conversation include updates on work being done by @kinfolktech AR technology and the design work by @MemRiverParks tomleepark.org

Replying to @MellonFdn @cmonstah
“I have always thought one of the ways monuments have always existed for people who didn’t have monuments in public spaces is in the poetry of a culture. In our poetry, as in our storytelling, our histories are kept safe and precious.” –@ProfessorEA

The 22nd Amendment was officially ratified #OTD in 1951, setting two terms as the limit for presidents. George Washington’s precedent was followed by his successors until FDR won a third term. Wendell Willkie supporters donned these buttons in his campaign against FDR in 1940.

Cool, cool cool. Student email threatening repercussions in end of semester teaching evaluations if I don't change his grade. Really glad those are used for tenure & promotion.
