Hereโs a thought which would put British farmers on a more level playing field with the competition from rest of the world. The government needs to urgently introduce interest free loans to enable farmers to plant next year's crops, and provide feed and bedding for livestock for everyone facing a shortfall. So @NFUtweets are going to lobby for just that.

๐จ THIS IS NOW A NATIONAL FOOD SAFETY WARNING we warned was inevitable if we left the EU!!!
The FSA is telling pregnant women, children under five, over-65s and vulnerable people not to eat runny eggs when eating out.
Why?
Bcunusually large and rapidly increasing Salmonella outbreak which investigators say may be linked to imported eggs used in restaurants and catering.
One person dead.
207 confirmed cases.
38% hospitalised.
Meanwhile the FSA says there is no evidence UK-produced eggs are affected.
Britain spent decades building one of the safest egg systems in the world.
Now thanks to Brexit freedoms vulnerable people are effectively being told: British Lion eggs at home are safe but be careful ordering a runny egg in a British restaurant because you may not know where that egg came from.
How on earth is that progress?
Food standards are not red tape.
Border controls are not bureaucracy.
Food security includes food safety.

Iโm standing in a downpour in the middle of a golden wheat field in Ukraine.
Right now, Ukrainian farmers are gathering the 2026 harvest: 80 million tons of grain and oilseeds.
Thatโs roughly 10 kilograms of food for every single person on Earth.
But that food might never reach the world's table.
Russia is systematically bombing Odesaโs ports and civilian cargo shipsโdeliberately targeting international vessels and American commercial interests.
This is a direct attack on global food security. It fuels inflation in every grocery store worldwide.
Protecting Ukraineโs port infrastructure isnโt charity.
It is defending global economic stabilityโand keeping the world fed.

Britain imports around 40% of its food, and the figure keeps climbing.
It closes its own small abattoirs, then ships the meat further to be processed elsewhere.
It tells its farmers to rewild and plant trees, then buys beef from countries still clearing forest to raise it.
It signs trade deals letting in meat produced to welfare and chemical standards its own farmers are banned from using.
It blames the British cow for the climate while the imported one, shipped half the world, somehow counts for less on the ledger.
(The emissions did not vanish. They were exported, along with the responsibility.)
A nation congratulating itself for eating less British beef, while quietly eating more of everyone else's.
They didn't cut the harm. They moved it offshore and looked pleased with themselves.

A quarter of Britain's largest reed bed burned in a single day. The ground had been waterlogged for most of the year.
April 2020, the Inner Tay Estuary in Perthshire. Fire took 125 hectares of reed bed and needed nine fire appliances and a helicopter to stop.
The water beneath the reeds saved nothing. A wetland or moorland fire runs on the dead, dry vegetation standing on the surface. How soaked the peat below is barely comes into it.
Two things had loaded the gun:
- Winter cutting for thatch stopped 15 years earlier, leaving deep beds of standing dead reed
- The old patchwork of cut and uncut ground, which used to break a fire's run, had gone
As a result, Britain's largest bearded tit population was hit. Two marsh harrier nests were lost. Around 30 nests were burnt out, their broken shells found in the ash.
Rewetting manages the water. It does nothing about the fuel.

Activist: "Farmers are millionaires sitting on land worth a fortune. They can afford the inheritance tax."
Farmer: "How much did I earn last year?"
Activist: "I don't know. A lot, surely."
Farmer: "Twenty-two thousand. Before the tractor broke."
Activist: "But the land's worth millions."
Farmer: "On paper. I can't eat the field or spend it. The only way to turn it into money is to sell it, and then I'm not a farmer, I'm a bloke who used to have a farm."
Activist: "So sell a corner of it."
Farmer: "A corner doesn't work as a farm. You can't run a suckler herd on the bit that's left after the taxman's had his slice. You sell one field, then the next bill comes, then another field. It ends one way."
Activist: "The land only costs that much because you won't sell it."
Farmer: "It costs that much because a hedge fund three counties over wants it for carbon credits and a footballer wants it for the view. Neither of them has ever calved a cow at three in the morning. They set the price. I get the bill."
Activist: "It's still an asset."
Farmer: "It's a workplace that happens to be expensive. You've decided the value of the shop is the same as the wage of the shopkeeper. Come back in February and watch me not be a millionaire in the rain."
