On June 19, 1865, news of freedom finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas; more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
This day reminds us of the importance of freedom, perseverance, and progress.
Let’s continue to reflect, learn, and grow together. Happy Juneteenth!

We join the entire Fayette County Public Schools community in mourning the loss of Dr. Mike Brown, Vice Chairman of the Board of Education and dedicated representative of District 2.
With over 40 years in education, Dr. Brown’s service to students, educators, and families has left an indelible mark. His wisdom, compassion, and commitment to student success will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of working with him. Dr. Brown was also a former mayor of Oakland and a devoted supporter of West Junior High School.
