A huge thank you to everyone - AMS staff, volunteers, Middle Atmosphere Committee members (pictured here) - that made #AMS22Middle possible!
It was wonderful to see groundbreaking contributions to science & community engagement. We are excited for future action items to come!

We have a new preprint out on ‘The Response of Surface Temperature Persistence to Arctic Sea-ice Loss’. Take a look!

There's 11 days left to apply for these two PhD positions, to join the @IscaModel team at Exeter. Join us to investigate predictions of extreme winter weather, or to better understand heat transport in (exo)planetary atmospheres. Open to UK and international students.
I'm also looking for a new PhD student to join our group @ExeterUniMaths to investigate tipping points in forecasts of extreme winter weather using explainable AI. In collaboration with @StephenIThomson and Adam Scaife (UoE and Met Office). Details here: exeter.ac.uk/study/funding/a…

I'm looking for a new #PhD student to come and join our group @ExeterUniMaths. We'll be exploring heat transport in atmospheres within and outside our solar system using @IscaModel and theory. Co-supervised by @WillSeviour and @GeoffVallis. exeter.ac.uk/study/funding/a…

I remember being very excited when @joanne_morten sent me this excellent project idea for our 2021 CMIP6 hackathon. It's great to see this now published - well done to Jo and the team!
New research led by @UniofExeter and @metoffice suggests Arctic Terns – which fly on the longest migrations of any animal on Earth – may be able to navigate the dangers posed by #climatechange. Dr Joanne Morten tells us more about the study 👇

This is no exaggeration. Moving with an international family to the UK is becoming completely unaffordable.
Replying to @KatieNewburyKN
If a British person brought their partner and two children to the UK under these revised fees (taking a 20% increase to the fees and revised IHS fees) a five year journey to indefinite leave to remain would cost over £33,000! Just in Home Office fees... completely ridiculous! 8/
Reading about the 'significant' increases to UK visa fees on the way. In case anyone thinks they are currently cheap, @HannahSus and I have already spent well over £10k on visa fees during the last 5 years.

A broader aim will be investigating links between polar vortex structure and Mars's polar layered deposits - the only climate record we have of a planet other than Earth. 7/8

We're happy to answer any questions! @ExeterUniMaths @WillSeviour @StephenIThomson
To add to this: Moving internationally for PhDs/postdocs (as is often encouraged/expected) means you'll likely pay social security taxes but not meet the qualifying years to ever receive any retirement benefits from them.
