I will not be at #apsdfd2022 this year unfortunately. But my group and collaborators will be represented! Come check out our talks on three very different subjects. See thread below for more details.
Kevin Manohar - Z24.00003 - Sensor-based Temporal Super-Resolution for Turbulent Separated Flows.
The low and mid-frequency unsteadiness of the separation bubble on the "speed-bump" geometry is explored using machined-learned technique linking surface pressures to the flow field.

Let's dive deep into what Harris Hydraulic Laboratory @UW is doing for a @UWMadison experiment from RFTS 3: turbines, flumes, lasers, and a heaping helping of data analysis. How can turbines most efficiently be organized in an array? #marineenergy #flume #lasers #turbines

ALT Here's the flume, with the turbine and laser setup. The computer shown here controls the operations (with a little help from the researchers).

ALT Water flows through the flume as the turbine blades spin. Meanwhile, a laser fires through a horizontal slot and creates a plane of light, reflecting off of specially designed tiny particles with a reflective coating flowing through the water to derive the speed of the water as it passes through the spinning blades. A mirror on the opposite side of the laser helps illuminate what would otherwise be blind spots created by the blades.
While I will not be at #apsdfd this year, my group is!
Abigale Snortland - Exploring intercycle variation of cross-flow turbine hydrodynamics (F24)
Kevin Manohar (colab w U.Calgary) - Discussing temporal super-resolution of PIV flowfields using auxillary sensors and NNs (H23).
New equipment in the lab! LDV system to explore turbine hydrodynamics. Alignment of the probes is proving a challenge but we are going to get some cool data with this. #FlumeFriday.

A free diver captured the moment when two bubble rings collided, dissolving into each other to form one larger circle.
We are attending AIAA SciTech virtually this year! Showing extensive new results for the Gaussian speed-bump turbulent separated flow geometry. Come check out our two talks and papers.

Excited to share that our team from UW was one those selected under the SHARKS program! We will be optimizing cross-flow turbine design and control for high-confinement arrays, aiming to greatly reduce their levelized cost of energy.
Earlier this week, we announced selections under our 🦈SHARKS 🦈 program, 11 projects working to design the future of hydrokinetic generation systems for riverine and tidal currents! bit.ly/360SgHi
Very useful summary!
Now online: Collection of papers associated with the invited talks presented at the 2019 #apsdfd meeting in Seattle go.aps.org/3nMyx46
Come check out our exciting new results at #apsdfd2020!
Y09:8: Large-field PIV measurements of turbulent separation zone
P18:21: Automated Identification of Vortex properties using Bayesian approach
F04:7: Supersonic retropropulsion flowfield dynamics
Sahil Kommalapati talked about his work to extract structure from turbulent flowfield data using a bayesian matching approach.
