🇦🇺 She survived the execution of her fellow nurses. Then, for three and a half years, her friends kept that survival a secret. On February 16, 1942, Japanese soldiers ordered 22 Australian nurses into the sea at Radji Beach, on Bangka Island. Two days earlier, the nurses had survived the sinking of the SS Vyner Brooke while fleeing Singapore. Now machine guns opened fire behind them. Vivian Bullwinkel, 26, was hit. She fell into the water and lay motionless until the soldiers left. Of the 22 nurses, she alone survived. For 12 days, she hid with a wounded British soldier, tending him despite her own injury. Eventually, they surrendered. He died soon afterward. In captivity, Vivian found other nurses who had survived the shipwreck. She told them what had happened on the beach. They understood the danger: their captors must never discover that a witness to the massacre was still alive. For the rest of their imprisonment, they never spoke of it. Through hunger, disease, and years of captivity on Bangka and Sumatra, they protected her secret. Eight of the captured Australian nurses died before freedom came. Vivian survived to testify at the Tokyo war crimes tribunal and spent decades honoring her murdered colleagues. She died on July 3, 2000, aged 84. During captivity, silence had helped protect her. Afterward, she made sure the world heard their story. Follow @Vanguard_WW2 for more extraordinary lives behind the history of World War II.

LARGE NUMBERS OF ILLEGAL MIGRANTS OPENLY CARRYING LIFE JACKETS IN NORTHERN FRANCE Wednesday 28th October 2026 | 11:45am | Loon-Plage, Northern France Walking along the main road from the bus stop in Loon-Plage towards the Dunkirk Jungle illegal migrant camp, I came across a very large group of illegal migrants openly carrying life jackets. The group appeared to be guided and guarded by smugglers as they made their way along the road. In my assessment, these people are preparing to move towards Calais ahead of the next opportunity to cross the English Channel to the UK. No attempt to hide the life jackets. No attempt to conceal their movements. All happening openly, in broad daylight, on a main road in northern France.

Piers Morgan asked an activist to define “non-binary.” She panicked, deflected, and cried it was “uncomfortably personal.” Then Riley Gaines dropped the hammer: “If you think this is uncomfortably personal, try undressing in a locker room with a 6’4 naked man.” TOTAL DESTRUCTION. 🔥

The biggest mistake tourists make in Japan is dragging a fifty-pound suitcase up and down subway stairs. Watch how Japanese travelers board the bullet train. They walk on with a cup of green tea, a small shoulder bag, and both hands free. Where is their luggage? It is already in the next city, waiting for them. In Japan, the system is called Takkyubin, recognizable everywhere by a logo of a mother black cat carrying her kitten gently in her mouth. When you check out of your hotel in Tokyo at eight in the morning, you hand your heavy suitcase to the front desk, fill out a tiny slip, and pay about twenty dollars. You can even send it straight from the corner convenience store. Then you spend the entire day wandering through mountain temples or eating street food with nothing on your back. When you walk into your traditional inn in Kyoto that evening, your suitcase is already standing neatly in your room, wiped clean, with the handle turned toward you. In fifty years of handling millions of bags a year, lost luggage is virtually unheard of. A society runs smoothly when you can hand your belongings to a stranger at a convenience store and know they will beat you to your hotel.

My wife teaches English at a high school in Japan. Last week, she gave her students a writing prompt: "If you could be American for one day, what would you do?" She read me the answers at dinner. She had to stop three times because she was laughing too hard. "Own a pickup truck. I don't need a truck. I just want to say, 'Don't worry, I'll grab the truck.'" "Have a garage. Not for a car. For 'stuff.'" "Buy 48 rolls of toilet paper at Costco. I live with my parents. I want them anyway." "Get a free refill. Then another one. Then another one. Until they ask me to leave. They won't ask me to leave." "Water my lawn at 6 a.m. in a bathrobe and wave at my neighbor." "Call my teacher 'dude.'" (My wife underlined this one. Twice.) "Hang a flag on my house for no reason. Just because it's Tuesday." And a lot of them wrote some version of this: "Tell my dad I love him. Out loud. At the dinner table." Then she had the class vote for the best answer. The winner wasn't funny. It came from the funniest kid in the class. The truck kid. "Stand up when the anthem plays, put my hand on my heart, and look around and see everybody else doing it too." My wife asked him why he picked that one. He shrugged. "Because then you're never proud alone."

🚨JUST FILED🚨 The government says the search warrant for Ilhan Omar's investigation is still only partial executed. The D.C. U.S. attorneys office does not oppose the warrant being unsealed at a later date. "Unsealing everything now _____ imperils the investigation, and publicly exposes suspected criminal wrongdoing." Some details have already appeared in the press coverage from unnamed sources. The government also refers to "the subject" as Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi. The government is asking the court to deny the applications without prejudice and to require status reports once execution is complete. This filing is a response to applications by about 16 press organizations (including The New York Times, Judicial Watch, and others) seeking immediate unsealing of search warrant materials.

In 2022, similar story happened in Virginia. A blizzard shut down I-95 between DC & Richmond. People were left stranded overnight. Schmidt Bakery had a truck stranded on there & the owner instructed the driver to hand out rolls & bread to those who needed it.
