World Bank targets fivefold critical minerals financing increase
World Bank President Ajay Banga on Friday said the development lender has set a goal of quintupling its critical minerals business in five years, and has identified 20 countries that it can partner with on critical minerals development projects.
Banga revealed the new goal in prepared remarks to a plenary session at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.
“In critical minerals, we plan to quintuple our business in five years,” Banga said. “This week, we launched our first country compacts with MDB partners—to build local industries and keep more jobs and value at home.”
The World Bank’s new Metals and Minerals implementation plan is targeting US$19 billion ($27.35 billion) in critical minerals financing over the fiscal 2026–2030 period, compared with US$3.6 billion in the fiscal 2021–2025 period.
Critical minerals development is an area where the United States, the World Bank’s largest shareholder, has called for the bank to devote more financing resources.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said earlier this week that he wanted the bank to play a bigger role in enabling critical minerals mining and processing capacity through project de-risking and finance and investment in enabling infrastructure. He said this includes deep-sea mining projects.
Banga did not mention deep-sea mining, but the bank’s metals plan calls for a “precautionary approach” to the nascent sector, adding that any engagement and investments must be consistent with applicable bank policies.
Banga reviewed the World Bank’s overall increases in financing during the 2026 fiscal year that ended on June 30, including mobilising US$112 billion in private capital, a more than threefold increase from the 2022 fiscal year, before he assumed his role.
Alongside lending from the World Bank’s own balance sheet, this brought the group’s total financing to US$230 billion for fiscal 2026, he said.

As far as @MedPalPlc (#MPAL) is concerned, it would appear that the last of the IPO investors are out and the shares are ready for a fresh leg to the upside. The ongoing charting call here was, and perhaps still is, 10p by the end of October. A punchy call, but then again, it is a punchy stock.

@eurasiamining: A Better Chart, with Familiar Reservations: #EUA has long been associated with sharp moves and persistent selling into strength. The latest rally approached the first target at 3.6p without quite reaching it, before sellers reappeared. Whether that selling reflects a distressed holder or a committed bear is not clear.
What matters technically is that the subsequent pullback has held above a rising 50-day moving average. That leaves scope for another test of the 3p-plus area in the coming days. An RSI rebound from above 50 adds some encouragement.
Near-term recovery reference: a retest above 3p, with 3.6p still an important target. Conditional best case: around 4.75p if a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict materially improves sentiment. Risk-control level: 2.18p at the 50-day moving average. share-talk.com/traders-cafe-… @ZaksTradersCafe

The U.S. has designated helium as a critical material, citing its importance to semiconductor production and growing supply chain risks.
The designation comes as the war with Iran strains the global helium supply.
60 Minutes reported on the shortage on Sunday, including its impact on scientific research. Joe Sachleben, technical director at an NMR lab at the University of Chicago, says there is no substitute for helium. Without enough of it, researchers could be forced to decide which machines to “sacrifice.” cbsn.ws/47DMmLf

Former stock market darling @GuardianMetRes (NYSE-A: $GMTL, LON: #GMET) continued to lose ground. Having peaked at over 300p in April, the shares ended the week at 77p. This is quite a fall from grace, given that the market cap in the spring would have been over £0.5bn.
When I noted this among a group of stock market investors during the week, it was suggested to me that the company had been “over-hyped”. I think this is somewhat unfair, as, to my mind, the company was very well promoted and did so at the right time in the explorer/developer cycle.
That said, the driver here is that the company would be one of those addressing the US critical-metals supply chain and its security. At the end of the day, the only way to do this is through production, not just exploration and proving up assets. But perhaps just as relevant—and something that CEO @oliverjfriesen will be aware of—is that the Lassonde Curve has kicked in.
Although my favourite curve is the Laffer Curve, no one in government currently appears to believe in it. The Lassonde Curve, however, has almost god-like credibility, so much so that there are mining companies I know that are keen to suggest they have been able to escape its peaks and troughs.
But in the case of Guardian, looking at the Lassonde graphic, it can be seen that the share price has very much entered the Orphan Period. The question now, with the shares down by more than two-thirds from their peak, is whether current levels represent the floor ahead of a big bull run as it moves towards becoming an operating company. voxmarkets.com/articles/the-… @ZaksTradersCafe

Critical Metals has done rather well from our 15p call 🎳 reaching the third target at 40p. Above 40p, the next projected line pointed as high as 57p which has been breached. Reaching a target is one thing; establishing it as a platform for the next move is another. @ZaksTradersCafe take a bow 👏

@CriticalMetals_ : Targets cleared, with a golden cross approaching: #CRTM has already passed its first target at 15p and its second at 24p. Clearing 24p opens the possibility of an acceleration, although 40p by the end of October is a punchy objective. The 50-day moving average is approaching a cross above the 200-day average, a configuration known as a golden cross. The approach to that crossover can be a particularly strong phase for a chart. As long as the shares hold above recently broken resistance around 22p, the route towards 40p remains open. share-talk.com/traders-cafe-… @ZaksTradersCafe

Policy clarity matters for miners. Zimbabwe retained its 5% gold royalty for 2026, with 10% applying above US$5,000/oz, after withdrawing a proposed increase. Greater near-term certainty helps, but 30% US$ surrender rules and operating costs remain key considerations. #ACFThematicResearch bit.ly/Zimbabwe-ThematicNote

I think the scale of this is hard to get your head around.
As a new concept and world first its not meant to be an easy understand.
I’m not a #crypto, #web3 or #gaming person—mining is what I understand.
But following the games, the ecosystem and the nGRND channels, it does look absolutely gargantuan 🤩
Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if @nGRND_io eventually wanted more gold from @FirstClassMetal
Than calculated at £4.8 million before June 2027.
#FCM is NGRND only gold partner atm.
That’s speculation on my part, but you can see the potential.
I can understand why they might want the token listed before payments start, although that doesn’t mean the payments depend on it.
My understanding is that FCM has funding for the current work. Whether they decide to expand or accelerate the programme, we’ll have to wait and see if they find more visible gold 😉
Anyway, here’s to the future! 🍻
