Grateful to the AHA for the opportunity to discuss workforce challenges facing our nation’s hospital workforce and the short- and long-term solutions needed to solve them.
Erin Fraher, Ph.D., director of the Program on Health Workforce Research and Policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, shares the importance of investing community health workers. #AHAMTG

"We have a nursing shortage, straight across the board. Of the workforce that I am most concerned about, I am most concerned about nursing. We have shortages in urban areas. We have shortages in rural areas. We have hospitals desperate for nurses." - @ErinFraher of @uncsheps

There has been a distressing amount of chatter on Twitter with an "us" vs "them" tone about different health professional groups, specialties and educational degrees. We, the patients, need you all and we need you to practice in true interprofessional teams.

Yes! It is time for other states, including North Carolina, to take an evidence-based approach to Nurse Practitioner regulation to ensure access to care.
The thorough research done and the commitment to quality health care by @JoanneSpetz and fellow health care researchers helped guide the development of #AB890. Thank you!

A reminder that wearing a mask is primarily about reducing the source of infection, not about full protection of the wearer. I wear a mask to protect YOU. You wear a mask to protect ME. Works best when combined with physical distance & well-ventilated areas.

The nursing profession needs a comprehensive Masterfile like we have for physicians. In the meantime, thanks to @HRSAgov, we have the #NSSRN. Analyses by @NursEsitaPatel suggest it be used to estimate state-level nurse employment settings (esp in larger states with bigger n's)
Our most recent policy #brief from researcher @NursEsitaPatel compared hospital nurse settings from the 2018 #NSSRN to #NC licensure data & found the two data sets comparable. Read brief here go.unc.edu/nssrn

Estimates of #nurses across #hospital settings were similar using NSSRN vs. NC licensure data. The slight differences in inpatient vs outpatient make sense given the shift from acute to ambulatory care over recent years, but more on that from @ErinFraher and I soon...

Cool visualization showing how SOP restrictions impacts likelihood of relocating to other states.
Replying to @Alicia_Plemmons
We found that NPs in states with laws that require them to work in complicated relationships with physicians were 0.46% more likely to move. NPs in restrictive states were 5.33% less likely to relocate to states with similar restrictions, instead preferring freedom in their jobs.
