It was a terrible day for Donald Trump. Judging by these midterms, Trump’s political brand has suffered a major defeat. But it is too early to declare that brand finished. The greatest damage comes from the gap between his image as a strongman, a winner, and a skilled dealmaker and the results voters actually experience.
Trump canceled his public appearance following Republican losses in the midterm elections. The backlash reflects voters’ concerns about the cost of living, the war with Iran, and dissatisfaction with his leadership—all of which strike directly at his brand promises.
Democrats have won control of both the House and the Senate, making breakthroughs even in traditional Republican strongholds. That alone shows that Trump’s political appeal was insufficient to preserve Republican majorities.
