Before the age of 50, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had lost his father, mother, grandfather, uncle, beloved wife, and several of his children. Save this reminder for your difficult days. His father, Abdullah, died before he was born. His mother, Aminah, passed away at Al-Abwa when he was just six years old. His grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, who took him into his care, died when he was eight. His uncle, Abu Talib, protected and supported him for many years. Then came the loss of his beloved wife, Khadijah (radiyallahu anha), who had been his wife for 25 years and the first person to believe in his prophethood. Both losses occurred in the same year, known in the seerah as the Year of Sorrow. The Prophet ﷺ had seven children, six of whom were from Khadijah (radiyallahu anha). His sons, Al-Qasim and Abdullah (radiyallahu anhuma), died in infancy. His daughter Ruqayyah (radiyallahu anha) passed away while he was away for the Battle of Badr. His daughters Zaynab and Umm Kulthum (radiyallahu anhuma) also passed away during his lifetime. His last son, Ibrahim (radiyallahu anhu), born to Mariyah al-Qibtiyyah (radiyallahu anha), died before reaching the age of two. Upon his death, the Prophet ﷺ said: “The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1303) Only his daughter Fatimah (radiyallahu anha) survived him, passing away approximately six months after his death. Why is Khadijah (radiyallahu anha) the only wife shown on screen? Because she was his only wife for 25 years and the mother of six of his children. After her death, the Prophet ﷺ married Sawdah, Aishah, Hafsah, Zaynab bint Khuzaymah, Umm Salamah, Zaynab bint Jahsh, Juwayriyah, Umm Habibah, Safiyyah, and Maymunah (radiyallahu anhunna), all honoured as the Mothers of the Believers. Despite enduring so many losses, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remained patient, steadfast, and devoted to Allah. Allah says: “And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.” — Qur’an 21:107 May Allah grant us patience during hardship, strengthen our faith, and unite us with His beloved Prophet ﷺ in Jannatul Firdaus.
