Playing in @XMapTools with a favourite sample on #ThinSectionThursday. Looking at the quant EDS data, importing into XMT and then calculating mineral formula. Last map is the plag An component, with alternate comps & zoning when included in garnet!🤩 #geology #rocks #ZeissNatRes

These X-ray maps show an interesting feature: symplectites around garnet, formed of plagioclase (XAn = 99) and white mica. Have you ever seen such a mineral assemblage for symplectites? The maps were obtained with EPMA and explored with @XMapTools.

Garnets also show compositional zoning, like this one right here of a nice spiral-like garnet from a metapelite.

You know, I've been meaning to play around with XMapTools for a while now, and this was the perfect excuse to start. I'm inclined to agree that the subtle Ca zonation near the edges is much more visible! The bright inclusions sort of vanish, but they aren't the point.
This is a stunning image @thegeojesse. Mapping over large areas is a must for such samples 😉
