Nithya Raman (DSA) defeats Bass to become next L.A. mayor. Late-arriving mail-in ballots pushed Raman ahead, and by Thursday morning she was leading Bass by nearly 35,000 votes. Raman ran with the backing of the Democratic Socialists of America, the leftist organization that endorsed Mayor Zohran Mamdani in New York and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), among others. Democrat Socialist from Coast To Coast.

Going Postal: A female postal worker opened fire at the main post office in Des Moines, Iowa, shooting two coworkers on the second floor (an employee-only area). A third worker was injured while fleeing. Police captured the suspect nearby on a bike path without resistance.

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie said Thursday he expects to secure 218 signatures next week for a discharge petition on the Epstein Files Transparency Act II, which would force a House vote once Congress returns. The follow-up bill, co-sponsored with Democrat Ro Khanna, aims to strengthen the original law by letting survivors access their own records, allowing state attorneys general to pursue related prosecutions, and enabling legal challenges against the Justice Department for withholding or heavily redacting files

The Dow plunged 1,833 points, or 3.44%, on Thursday to close at 51,523, completely erasing Wednesday’s sharp post-midterm rally in one of its worst sessions since April 2025. The selloff was driven by a broad retreat from AI and tech stocks as investors reacted to Democratic midterm gains and concerns they could slow the data-center buildout that has powered recent market gains.

House Speaker Mike Johnson will step down as Republican leader following his party's midterm election defeat. Johnson, the highest-ranking Republican in the US after President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, is second in the line of presidential succession. 👋🏼

BREAKING: Hackers are turning refrigerators into weapons. Europe’s supermarket freezers were remotely overheated, spoiling tons of food. France’s blood-bank plasma storage was reset from –30 °C toward 110 °C (caught in time). Now the Pentagon is investigating the same style of failures at U.S. military commissaries.

BREAKING: Hackers targeted blood bank refrigerators in France, remotely overriding temperature controls on plasma storage units. The systems were pushed from the required –30 °C toward extreme heat near 110 °C. Quick detection and alarms prevented any loss of the blood supply, but the attack shows how easily critical cold-chain infrastructure can be turned into a weapon.

The Pentagon is investigating a string of freezer failures at U.S. military commissaries as a suspected cyberattack. In late August, units at at least six bases (including Fort Huachuca) switched into defrost mode overnight and heated the food, spoiling inventories. Cyber Command, Army CID, and DCIS are probing the incidents and coordinating with French authorities.
