Who does AI ultimately serve? Is it the people, or the systems shaping their lives?
At #AIDF2026, Tari Wills of Luminate reminds us that the future of AI and democracy must be rooted in the public interest.

AI can strengthen election management, but it can also expose vulnerabilities. At the AI and Democracy Forum 2026, Dr. Bayode, INEC’s Director of ICT, stressed the need for continuous security testing and collaboration with technology experts to identify and fix weaknesses before election day.
The takeaway: Secure the systems before the stakes are highest.

“As of today, the voters register is not on INEC’s website or any official website. INEC owes Nigerians and stakeholders an official statement. This silence does not inspire confidence.”

Technology may support an election. It cannot take responsibility for one.
Artificial intelligence can strengthen election administration, but it also raises critical questions about transparency, human oversight and accountability. At the AI and Democracy Forum (AIDF) 2026, one takeaway stood out: the integrity of an election depends not just on the technology deployed, but on the safeguards governing its use and the people held accountable for its outcomes.
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the priority must be clear: establish safeguards, preserve human judgment in consequential electoral decisions, and ensure that every use of AI strengthens, not weakens public trust.

Everybody wants the votes. But who is counting on the voters?
From INEC’s warning against vote tampering to the political alliances, campaign calculations and promises of millions of youth votes, the road to #NigeriaDecides2027 is getting interesting. But beneath the headlines are bigger questions about who gets to choose, whether every vote will count, and what all this political manoeuvring means for ordinary Nigerians.
This week on The Ballot, we look beyond the headlines.

Who controls the influence of AI on Nigeria’s 2027 elections?
From AI-generated political content and disinformation to cybersecurity threats and the use of technology in election administration, artificial intelligence is changing the landscape in which elections are conducted and experienced.
The challenge is to harness its potential while protecting electoral integrity, public trust and the right of citizens to make informed choices. #Throwback to the AI and Democracy Forum (AIDF) 2026, where stakeholders examined what it will take to safeguard Nigeria’s 2027 general elections in an age of artificial intelligence.
The question is no longer whether AI will shape elections, but how we ensure it serves democracy.

Some people leave a mark through what they do. Others leave one through how they make you feel. @DCynthiaM does both.
As our Director of Programmes, she brings conviction to the work, purpose to the conversations, and a deep commitment to the democracy we are all working to build. Today, we celebrate not just the leader she is, but the person behind the work.
Now, let’s see who really knows Cynthia!
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Cynthia? Is it her signature hairstyle, a colour she loves, something she always says, her infectious energy, or a moment with her that stuck with you?

Yesterday, we took another important step in our preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections with the commencement of our election observation planning workshop.
Over the next two days, we will be reviewing our observation methodology, strengthening our institutional systems, interrogating emerging risks to electoral integrity, and refining our strategies for providing independent, credible, and evidence-based oversight of the 2027 elections.

Who gets a seat at the table, and who is left standing outside?
The numbers tell a story. One we cannot afford to ignore, and one that raises serious questions about the future of representation in Nigeria.
As 2027 draws closer, some voices are getting closer to the ballot, while others are slowly fading from the picture.
The figures might surprise you. The trend might trouble you, but what we do with this information matters most.
Swipe through. Look closely. The future of representation cannot wait.

“Please send proof of payment” is a sentence every Nigerian knows by heart. This week, it seems politics caught on. A video made the rounds that was older than some of the people sharing it. A list went out with names missing. A claim got a very public reply. And a few promises were made that can only be checked on the day itself. So what really counts as proof, and who gets to decide? Full gist in this week’s Ballo

As Nigeria looks towards 2027, strengthening electoral integrity requires more than identifying digital threats. It demands the capacity to anticipate, detect and respond to them. At the AI and Democracy Forum 2026, conversations highlighted efforts to build the capacity of INEC’s National Chairmen and ICT teams to identify digital threats and strengthen the Commission’s systems against emerging cyber risks.
The convening also provides an opportunity to explore partnerships with technology companies, including Microsoft, to address disinformation and strengthen resilience in an evolving electoral landscape.
For Yiaga Africa, these conversations are critical. Responsible AI, stronger cybersecurity and collaboration among electoral bodies, technology companies and civil society will be essential to protecting information integrity and public trust ahead of the 2027 elections.
The goal is clear: ensure technology strengthens democracy, not undermines it.
