This post reminds me that Boone’s greatest sin is attending Southern Cal
Aaron Boone is at the UNC vs. Syracuse football game because his son is a student assistant on the Tar Heels coaching staff (via @MaxBrowne4)

You can disagree with them, sure. I often do. But that's not because I think they failed to apply a rule correctly. It's because I want the call to be different.

None of this makes it any less silly to appeal to a rule that is not, and has never been, enforced at the Major League level to suggest that the umpire was wrong. Check swing calls, almost by definition, cannot be wrong!

The definition is unclear, absolutely. There is not a rule to govern when a checked swing becomes a real swing, absolutely. We accept the fallibility of umpires in many cases in the game. Again, you may think we shouldn't. I'd probably agree.

Next year MLB could test out ACS in the AZ Fall League at 20 degrees instead of 45 degrees. Then what?

What we saw last night, rather clearly, is that the umpire interpreted Diaz's action as "striking at the ball." You might disagree. It seems you do. But appealing to a set of rules that do not apply to the game in question is silly.

As I said in a different post, the rulebook definition of a swing, which you derive from the definition of a swinging strike, is that the batter struck at the ball. That leaves when a take becomes a swing open to interpretation, sure.

A swing is defined in MLB, it's just not defined as strictly as you'd like. Swings are when the batter "[strikes] at the ball." Is it open to interpretation? Yes. Is it a definition? Also yes. Is it different from ACS? It's at least less clear!

Your post posits that if a different standard were applied, the result would be different. Cool! That's what I said too!

My hypothesis is that it has a lot to do with people thinking about football as a sport where the strategy and the execution are more separate. So similar to what Mr. Castro posited

It is the same because the complaint is “the result would be different if you applied a different rule”

If this was a coin-flip scenario: if you get heads on your first two flips, the chance you will get two more heads, before your opponent gets four tails is: 81.25% What does this mean? There is no "momentum" in being up 2-0
In all best-of-seven postseason series, teams with a 2-0 lead have gone on to win the series 80 of 96 times (83%) In series with the current 2-3-2 format, teams taking a 2-0 lead at home have gone on to win 47 of 58 times (81%)
