Remarks by HE President Nechircan Barzani @IKRPresident, President of the Kurdistan Region, emphasizes justice, support and a better future for Ezidi survivors of ISIS crimes. His Excellency welcomed the launch of the "Survivors Rise Network" funded & supported by @YazdaOrg & @giz_gmbh as an important step towards empowering survivors to participate in decisions affecting their rights and future. Listening to survivors voices and involving them in decisions concerning their lives and rights are essential to achieving justice and upholding their dignity. Survivors deserve justice, recognition, and the opportunity to shape their own future, rather than being defined forever by the genocide they endured. The success of the “Survivors Rise Network” will therefore contribute to broader efforts to promote justice, reconciliation, and lasting peace.

In Their Own Voices: Survivors Officially Launch the Survivors Rise Network Today, Yazda convened a survivor-led conference to officially launch the Survivors Rise Network (SRN). More than 130 participants attended, including survivors, government officials, diplomats, UN representatives, civil society actors, and partner organizations. Building on more than a decade of Yazda’s survivor-centered work and the Know Your Rights (KYR) Programme launched in 2024, the SRN was co-created with KYR graduates and survivor advocates. The network aims to strengthen survivors’ collective action, foster mutual support, and promote the meaningful participation of ISIL survivors in decision-making in Iraq and internationally. “Today we are not announcing ourselves on a screen. We stand before decision-makers whose actions affect our lives, speaking in our own voices and expressing our experiences and needs for ourselves,” said members of the Survivors Rise Network.

English | العربية: Yazda proudly congratulates Shireen Khero on her appointment to the Advisory Board of the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP). A Yazidi survivor and Yazda’s Advocacy and Outreach Officer, Shireen has dedicated her work to defending survivors’ rights and supporting families searching for missing loved ones since her release from ISIL captivity in 2017. Her appointment is particularly meaningful for Yazidi families in Iraq whose loved ones were abducted and taken to Syria by ISIL, many of whom remain missing. “As a Yazidi survivor, I know the pain of families still searching for their loved ones. The search for the missing crosses borders, and so must our commitment to finding answers. I am honored to bring survivors’ voices to this important work and advocate for the right of every family to know the truth.” — Shireen Khero The IIMP Advisory Board supports the meaningful participation of families, survivors, and civil society in the Institution’s work. This appointment also builds on Yazda’s partnership with the IIMP to advance efforts to address the fate of missing persons. We congratulate Shireen on this important achievement and wish her every success!

Yazda warmly congratulates Judge Navi Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law. We are deeply moved by her decision to dedicate the prize to all survivors of international crimes. For the Yazidi community, her legacy is personal. As a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, she helped deliver the 1998 Akayesu judgment, which recognised for the first time that rape can constitute genocide. That precedent has shaped how the world understands the crimes ISIL/Daesh committed against Yazidi women and girls, and it still guides the prosecutions survivors fought to bring about. At a time when international justice is under pressure, her recognition affirms what survivors have long known: peace requires justice.

Today, 1 October 2026, the remains of 25 Yazidi victims of ISIL are being transferred to the Yazidi Genocide Memorial in Solagh, Sinjar, where they will be handed over to their families following Yazidi religious rituals. This is the ninth group of remains of Yazidi victims to be returned to their families, bringing the total number of identified victims to 321, while around 530 remains are still awaiting identification. Natia Navrouzov, Executive Director at Yazda, commented: "Today, 25 families can finally lay their loved ones to rest, more than twelve years after they were taken from them. But every burial is also a painful reminder that the genocide is not something the Yazidi community can simply leave in the past."

English | العربية: Yazda Welcomes the Opening of the Mass Grave at Sharaf al-Din Shrine in Sinjar Sinjar, Iraq: On 20 September 2026, in the presence of the families of the victims, a ceremony marked the beginning of the process to open the mass grave at the Sharaf al-Din Shrine, northern Sinjar. The remains were first exhumed in 2015 and reburied here without DNA testing or formal identification, leaving families waiting over a decade for answers. A family member of one of the victims commented: "We have waited more than ten years, not knowing if our loved ones were truly the ones buried in that grave. Ten years is too long to carry that kind of doubt. The disagreements between the authorities were never ours to carry, they were not our burden to bear. All we ever wanted was the truth, and the chance to bury our loved ones with dignity, under their own names." On 17 September, Yazda and C4JR co-organized a stakeholder consultation in Erbil on Iraq's draft Law on Core International Crimes, bringing together MPs, government representatives, survivors, and civil society to strengthen the draft ahead of its first reading on 21 September. Natia Navrouzov, Executive Director at Yazda, said: "It is rare to see members of Parliament, survivors and civil society organizations sitting together in one room to discuss how justice should be shaped. This positive workshop showed that such dialogue is possible, and we hope it will continue throughout the legislative process until the law is enacted. Survivors were deprived of their agency when these crimes were committed against them. They must now be at the forefront of shaping the law that is intended to bring them the justice they have awaited for so long. The measure of this law will not simply be the crimes it recognizes on paper, but whether survivors can access justice through it in practice."

Two Years After UNITAD Closure: Justice Cannot Wait. Today marks two years since the closure of the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da'esh/ISIL (UNITAD). UNITAD was established in 2017 by the UN Security Council through Resolution 2379, at the request of the Government of Iraq following sustained advocacy by Yazda, survivors, and other civil society organizations, to collect, preserve, and store evidence of crimes committed by ISIL, including genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Over six years, UNITAD built an unprecedented evidentiary record of approximately 52 terabytes, including documents, digital files, witness statements, and forensic evidence from mass graves. Yazda was among the first organizations to sign an agreement with UNITAD in 2018 and worked closely with the Investigative Team until its closure. In response to requests from UNITAD, Yazda reviewed and processed relevant information and, with the informed consent of the individuals concerned, shared survivor and witness statements and information from its crime scene documentation. Yazda also supported requests from third states through UNITAD to advance criminal investigations and prosecutions in their jurisdictions. Throughout this process, survivors and witnesses were informed that the evidence they consented to share would support criminal accountability for ISIL crimes. This engagement raised legitimate expectations among survivors that their cooperation and the evidence they entrusted to UNITAD would contribute to concrete accountability efforts and, ultimately, prosecutions. Yet, two years after UNITAD's closure, much of this evidence remains inaccessible, and there appears to be no clear plan for when or how it will be made available for use in prosecutions. The central issue is therefore no longer whether evidence exists, but whether it can be accessed and effectively used. In light of the above, we respectfully call on the United Nations, Iraq, and states pursuing accountability for ISIL crimes to take the following actions: - Establish a practical pathway to access the UNITAD archive: Create a clear and sustainable framework for the secure access and use of UNITAD's evidence in criminal proceedings across jurisdictions, with meaningful Iraqi involvement and appropriate UN support. - Build a strong coalition for accountability: Bring together states, Iraq, relevant Syrian counterparts, civil society, and survivors to coordinate evidence-sharing, prosecutions, and diplomatic efforts, ensuring that existing evidence is translated into meaningful criminal accountability.
