ولأن التجربة المؤلمة لا تنتهي دائمًا بانتهاء الحدث بل قد تترك أثرها بالطريقة اللي نستقبل بها أشياء كانت تبدو عادية. فقد يصبح اللطف مثيرا للريبة والاقتراب سببا للحذر و الطمأنينة مدعاة للشك. المفارقة أن الإنسان قد يتعلم أن الحب آمن ويؤمن بوجود أشخاص لا يردون إيذاءه ..

لكنه لا يستطيع بالضرورة أن يشعر بذلك. فهناك فرق بين أن تعرف أن الأمان موجود، وبين أن تشعر أنك قادر على الاطمئنان إليه. جوانب كثيرة ممكن تتشافى وتتغير بالعلاج والتجارب الآمنة المتكررة اللي تعيد تشكيل استجابات الإنسان وتوقعاته،لكن أعتقد أن طيفا من التجربة المؤلمة سيظل يعترض المسعى.
